Previews: Kevin Peterson & Jacub Gagnon – “Amended” & “More Human Than Human” @ Thinkspace

Tonight at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, there will be showing from Kevin Peterson and Jacub Gagnon (interviewed). For his part, Peterson has brought a set of new works with him entitled Amended, all featuring his portraits of innocence, oftentime represented by children, superimposed over gritty of urban landscapes. For this exhibition, some of his works have an almost retro feel to them with old school adverts and logos inserted to add an extra layer to his narrative. Alongside him, More Human Than Human will fill the project room with Jacub Gagnon’s (interviewed) clever […]

Preview: Sylvia Ji – “La Catrina” @ CHG Circa

In celebration of her favorite holiday, Día de los Muertos, Sylvia Ji (interviewed) will be presenting all new works tonight at CHG Circa Gallery. With a return to her familiar “Day of the Dead” imagery including masks, skulls, and religious iconagraphy, the Los Angeles-based artist also returns to a subject that she perhaps feels most passionate about and if so, it shows. The rich and intricate pieces feature a contemplative look at the festival as her characters are caught in mid-pose as they go about remembering and honoring the deceased. Discuss this show here. Streets / Videos: Herakut – The Giant Storybook Project (Part I)

It’s time to update you on something that German duo Herakut have been working on recently – The Giant Storybook Project. Acting on their long-time desires to create a children’s book, Jasmin (interviewed) and Falk have taken to the streets around the world to paint the “pages” of their story. Murals of Lily, Jay, two giants, and their adventures have already hit the walls in Kentucky, Germany, Montreal, Toronto, Rochester, and San Francisco. We’ll be taking a closer look at this project (scheduled to go through 2013) as it […]

Preview: Bob Dob – “Mouseketeer Army” @ La Luz de Jesus

Tonight at La Luz de Jesus, Bob Dob will be revealing his paintings for his Mouseketeer Army showing (alongside Nathan Ota’s new body of work). The 76 new pieces featuring his familiar smirking Disneyesque characters combine to form his American Flag mural (seen below),  96″ x 50″ in its realized glory. Here is the back story – “On August 6th 1970 the war began when the radical Youth International Party, aka Yippies, invaded Disneyland as a way to rebel and protest against the establishment. They were successful in […]

Previews: Crystal Wagner – ‘Surface’ @ Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum

AM came across Crystal Wagner’s work just recently and since we saw images of her beautiful and complex installations, we’ve been looking forward to seeing what she would present for her solo exhibition Surface at the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum at Southeast Missouri State University. Traditionally a printmaker, Wagner projects her work way beyond the traditional two-dimensional artform as she builds intricate forms inspired by nature and natural structures within her immersive installations. Texture, surface, colour and dimension are manipulated to create site specific […]

2012 Election: #GoVote – November 6th

It seemed like only yesterday that the some of the art world (here, here, here, here) helped boost Barack Obama into the White House. Now, it’s almost time for the 2012 elections and although the buzz created by the visual culture may not be as overwhelming as 2008, some artists are still taking a stand to make their voices heard. TrustoCorp created this image above reminding people to vote between hot dogs (Obama) & burgers (Romney) as there’s only one week left before Nov. 6th. Also […]

Kickstarter: Tim Biskup – Big Butter Double Vinyl LP

Some of you may not know (including us), but painter Tim Biskup (featured) is part of a band Big Butter that he formed with his brother Mike Biskup back in the 80s. One of their favorite and most obscure recordings, BRAINSLED, was released as a cassette in 1989, but was never released on vinyl. They aim to rectify this and have gone to Kickstarter to fund this endeavor. Watch the informative video below and if interested, head over to support their project as there is some awesome […]

Streets: “Elevate South Broad Mural Projects” (Atlanta)

Last week, artists Hense, Push, Tilt (above), Sever, and Born came together to paint some new walls for the Elevate South Broad Mural Project in Atlanta. Located at South Broad Street between MLK Boulevard and Mitchell Street, the new work beautifies an area that sorely needed some love. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see more of these projects in the future. Discuss Tilt here. Discuss Push here. Photo Credit: Nick Mickolas / Graffuturism.
