Upcoming: Tran Nguyen & Stella Im Hultberg – “Borrowed Memories” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Coming up on the 29th of September, Tran Nguyen (above) and Stella Im Hultberg (below) will join forces for a dual showing at the Thinkspace Gallery entitled Borrowed Memories. Nguyen will be presenting new paintings featuring her surreal and dreamy imagery, while the NY-based Hultberg will be bringing her enticing portraiture mixed in with some sculptural elements. Streets: Liqen (Spain)

Recently, the Mexico-based Liqen travelled to Galicia, Spain to get some work in. One of the resulting murals was this stunning new piece featuring the legend of the white boar, with some of his signature surreal touches thrown in. Showing: LUDO – “Metal Militia” @ Galerie Itinerrance

Last week, the Galerie Itinerrance in Paris put new works from LUDO (interviewed) on display in a show entitled Metal Militia all executed with splashes of his signature green tinge. The series of paintings mirror the imagery seen in the public murals of the locally-based street artist and reflect his ongoing Nature’s Revenge campaign where his plants, insects, and animals have evolved deadly appendages and skills to fight back again the human race. Releases / Publications: Todd “REAS” James – “Yield to Temptation” @ The Standard (NY)

Fans of the New York-based Todd James will be able to greet their hometown hero 6-8 pm on Thursday night (September 20th) at The Standard in New York where he will be releasing his new book – Yield to Temptation. The NYC legend, otherwise known as REAS, will have original candy sculptures on view as well as will be available to sign the new publication, which includes images of 60 of his drawings featuring his cartoon-like graffiti style, all created exclusively for the volume. Openings: Bäst – “Germs Tropicana” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Last week, the Opera Gallery hosted an opening for a rare solo from Bäst at their New York location entitled Germs Tropicana. The show featured somewhat of a new direction for the Brooklyn-based street artist as he delivered pieces that were dense with his collage-style imagery, some of which were circular in nature. Teeming with his signature pop iconography, they resembled giant petri dishes – hence the title of the show. Art Focus: Vasilis Avramidis

For our Art Focus this week, a new artist you may want to check out is Vasilis Avramidis. The Greek artist’s oil paintings depict scenes and objects that overgrown where inhabitants are attempting to control and maintain the lush vegetation. Avramidis draws inspiration from gardens that are both real and imaginary, his references vary from the far away reality of Gilgamesh’s Garden of the Gods to the gothic Highgate Cemetery. He currently has a show Caretakers on display in London at Jacob’s Island Gallery for those who want to see the […]

Streets / Videos: ABOVE – “24% DESEMPLEADOS” (Spain)

The Bay Area-based ABOVE (interviewed) was recently invited to paint at the 7th annual International art festival ASALTO in Zaragoza, Spain. He chose a 120 foot long wall to highlight an issue that has been front and center for the people of the country – their 24% unemployment rate (the unemployment rate for those under 25 years old, is a staggering 53%). Streets: Barry McGee – Brooklyn (Part I)

No rest for the weary as Barry McGee has headed over to Brooklyn to work on a gigantic mural after recently putting together a stunning museum solo at the BAM/PFA (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). Starting this past weekend, Mr. Twist’s new piece is a larger representation of his signature cluster panel paintings.
