Streets: D*Face // Dictador Art Masters (Columbia)

Recently in Columbia, D*Face (interviewed) participated in the first Dictador Art Masters event along a international roster of street artists. Painting at an old abandoned rum distillery in the rainforest, the British artist had free rein to explore the pipes, tanks, nooks and crannies to search for some interesting “canvas” ideas. Take a look at what some photos below of what he came up with… Photo credit: Dictador Art Masters, Spraying Bricks, and the artist. Discuss D*Face here

Releases: JR – “MIGRANTS, MAYRA, PICNIC ACROSS THE BORDER, TECATE, MEXICO – U.S.A., 2017” Print

Last year at the US-Mexico border fence, a large scaffolded installation (covered) from JR (interviewed) was put in place to bring attention to the issue of immigration. If you remember, the he later organized a massive picnic (covered) with his signature eye motif adorning the table, leading to an iconic photo from above. The French artist has now released that image of the event as a print through Social Animals, and entitled it MIGRANTS, MAYRA, PICNIC ACROSS THE BORDER, TECATE, MEXICO – U.S.A., 2017. Sized at 27.5 x 39.5 […]

Previews: Emily Mae Smith – “Feast of Totems” @ Contemporary Fine Arts (Berlin)

Tomorrow night (June 9th), a new exhibition from Emily Mae Smith opens to the public at Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin. Entitled Feast of Totems, the show is well named as it features the re-occurring imagery of fruits, droplets, tongues, lips, and teeth that signal a grotesque consumption running through the new body of work. Also seen in multiple paintings is one of the Brooklyn-based artist’s most recognizable motifs, the totemic broom lady posed in familiar positions that harken back to classic paintings in art history. Utilizing a flat […]

Recap: Anthony Iacono – “Talking to Strangers” @ P·P·O·W

Closing at the end of last month in New York, Anthony Iacono’s show at P·P·O·W intrigued us with his provocative subject matter as well as technique. While many of the New York-based artist’s pieces seem to be referencing BDSM fantasies (some more directly with colorful renderings of kinky scenes and some more subtle by incorporating rope or cords into the compositions), the imagery is tempered by his dark humor and the way he never expands the viewer’s field of vision to take in the entire spectacle. Also of interest […]

Previews: Eric Joyner – “Glazed Machinations” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Continuing his annual showings at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, Eric Joyner (interviewed) will be returning for another solo on June 23rd. Cleverly entitled Glazed Machinations, the new body of work perfectly encapsulates what inspires him to paint – robots and donuts. Whether it be his signature Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots or incorporating the iconic Randy’s Donuts into his imagery, Joyner always finds novel new adventures for his two “muses” as well as unique ways for them to interact. Discuss Eric Joyner here.

Previews: “LAX/PDX” Curated By Thinkspace @ Antler Gallery

On June 9th, a massive group show will open at Antler Gallery in Portland entitled LAX/PDX. The exhibition is the 13th iteration of an effective way Thinkspace shares their roster of artists around the world by curating exhibitions for their friends at different galleries. You can see a full list of the artists below and some preview images but a few things that caught our eyes included another shark from Josh Keyes (seen above), a timely piece from OakOak, Matthew Grabelsky taking his animals off the subway, Mark Dean […]

Previews: Kevin Earl Taylor – “Apex” @ Circle Gallery (Berlin)

On June 23rd, Circle Culture’s Berlin branch will be opening an exhibition with Kevin Earl Taylor, his third with the gallery. Entitled Apex, the new body of work features paintings, works on paper and site-specific installations that seem to explore some the environmental issues facing our world today. Much of the San Francisco-based artist’s imagery documents moments of encounter between different species of the natural world, separated by constructs like glass spheres and pedestals. At the opening reception, author Carl von Siemens will be presenting his book Der […]

Showing: Dran – “Dessin du Jour/Londres”

Dran opened a new pop-up exhibition in London over the weekend entitled Dessin du Jour. As the title suggests, the body of work is dominated by approximately 120 drawings which the artist has been executing on a daily basis in preparation for the show. The pieces individually distill down the small victories and defeats, dreams and doubts and joys and sorrows of everyday life. We see a man marooned on an island encircled and cut-off by gridlocked traffic which speaks to the isolation of modern urban life, […]

Openings: Miss Van Retrospective @ Openspace Gallery

Openspace Gallery in Paris is paying tribute to Miss Van with a special retrospective. The show, curated by Samantha Longhi and Nicolas Chenus, presents more than 90 works from 2003 to today, and is running until June 14th. Spanning across 15 years, the exhibition highlights the French artist’s prolific body of works on paper, wood, and canvas. It’s quite an emotional journey for a viewer as they take a look at her varied sources of inspiration and her signature female characters set in diverse oniric situations. Upon […]
