Recap: Augustine Kofie – “MKNZM” @ Swinton Gallery

Last month, Swinton Gallery in Madrid hosted a show from Augustine Kofie (featured) entitled MKNZM (Mechanism). For his first solo exhibition in Spain, the American artist presented a new body of work including collage on wood, painting on canvas, and etched found clipboards featuring his signature structured yet free-flowing aesthetic. This time around, Kofie centered his work on the oblong shape, using them like belts to link parts of a conceptual machine while working with textures and gradients of a particular palette. On June 9th, two young painters will be opening a joint show at Tales Of Art Gallery in Imola, Italy entitled Beautiful Disasters. Curated by Sasha Bogojev, the exhibition will contrast Spanish artist Jose Luis Ceña Ruiz’s obscured portraits of people hiding in lush foliage with Romanian artist Ioan-Ștefan Botiș’ obsession with capturing disasters like car crashes, with fire being the key component in many of his works. With just one sculptural installation dominating Gagosian’s 511 Fifth Avenue space in Manhattan, Urs Fischer makes a bold statement about the nature of life itself. Constructed with aluminum and standing more than 10 feet tall, the life-size rhinoceros seems to absorb an assortment of everyday objects like a rollaway luggage, copy machine, car door and tires, toilet, vacuum cleaner, shovel, and laptop. Tonight in New York, P·P·O·W will be hosting the opening of a new solo from Erin M. Riley (interviewed) entitled Used Tape. Continuing to tackle issues that have become even more timely in this #metoo era, the Brooklyn-based artist uses her weaving skills to depict imagery that pushing the boundaries of the traditional medium. Riley’s large scale tapestries deal with deeply personal subject matter such as the “difficulty of womanhood, objectification of the female body, and traumas both large and small that weigh the search for self identity.” Discuss […]

Releases: JR x Os Gemeos x Pharrell – “1983” Album

Currently through Social Animals, JR, Os Gemeos, and Pharrell have a followup release to their BOOMBOX sculptural edition from last year (covered). 1983 – The Album (12″ vinyl) features four exclusive tracks by Pharrell & OsG, as well as the artwork from the twins and a photo taken by JR of Pharrell in the packaging as well as in a print. There is a simple and deluxe edition of this collaborative effort, both of which along with the BOOMBOX can be purchased here.
