Shepard Fairey Pursues Film Adaptation For “1984”

Remember this cover (also released as a print) from Shepard Fairey (featured) that was commissioned for new Penguin Book editions of George Orwell’s dystopian classic 1984 several years back? Word has now leaked that Mr. Obey will take a similar route as his friend and fellow street artist across the pond, Banksy, and get into film. Fairey will be teaming up with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment to attempt to bring Orwell’s seminal literary work, which certainly shares many of the themes seen in the LA-based […]

Videos: Kid Zoom – “Home” @ Turbine Hall

In October 2011, Kid Zoom (aka Ian Strange) returned to his native home Australia for a special project where he built a full scale reproduction of his childhood home at the prestigious Turbine Hall on Cockatoo Island. Following the Aussie suburban theme, Kid Zoom parks three classic Holden Commodores to round out the picturesque setting symbolizing his youth. What happens next is a whole lot of awesome and is captured in a special video where Zoom goes aggro and literally blows up the idyllic setting. […]

Streets: Escif (Valencia)

If you have been following the news, you may have heard about the student protests going on in Spain in response to the cuts to education spending as part of the country’s austerity measures. Not helping things are the heavy-handed response by police in Valencia. Of course, prolific local street muralist Escif had something to say about it – in the form of public art. More examples after the jump…

Preview: Quam Odunsi – “Anachronistic Capture: Motion & Stills” @ Design Matters

Technology moves forward at an ever-increasing pace every day and for visual art and capture, most of the time the latest slick digital innovation and highest number of megapixels do not provide the best picture. Analog film, however antiquated and labor-intensive in procedure, produces an accurate image and provides the viewer with a warm nostalgic feeling. In Anachronistic Capture: Motion & Stills, opening March 29 (and curated by AM’s Khoi Nguyen) at Design Matters in Los Angeles, Quam Odunsi uses vintage cameras and equipment to create […]

Openings: Victor Castillo – “The Jungle” @ Jonathan Levine

Through this weekend, the walls at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be displaying the surreal paintings of Victor Castillo. AM stopped by for the opening last month as the LA-based artist presented his new body of work, entitled The Jungle, which certainly described the state of the world that the Chilean-born painter likes to portray. His paintings are a reflection of the unrest and revolution that has been seen around the globe, accentuated and contrasted even further by the child-like figures and innocence that are […]

Studio Visit / Preview: Brett Amory – “Waiting 101” @ Lazarides (Newcastle)

A few Sundays ago, AM decided to swing by Brett Amory’s Oakland studio while he was preparing for his upcoming Lazarides solo entitled Waiting 101 at the Newcastle location. This show marks an evolution in his creative process, as he now carries his iPhone everywhere he goes and is able to immediately capture a moment whenever he feels inspired (whereas before, it would take months to compile images to use for his work). One thing we noticed was that all of the work for the […]

Openings: Saner – “Corazon Sangrante” @ Fifty24SF

On a wet Friday evening, Fifty24SF hosted Mexico City-based artist Saner’s latest exhibition entitled Corazon Sangrante (Bleeding Heart). The show is made up of a series of paintings and drawings (some of which have burn and stitching elements) with his signature characters fitted with animalistic masks in situations that reflect what he observes around him in everyday life. Saner explains the issues expressed in the show’s works are ones that “consume the body of a society that is getting closer to its destruction, unless the […]
