Open Walls Baltimore

A new project coordinated by Gaia in his home city has kicked off recently with this mural from the young street artist. Open Walls Baltimore is a public art initiative in a neighborhood burdened by 150 vacant homes and hopes to bridge the gaps between the artist community that calls Station North home and the residents of Greenmount West. Streets: JR (Los Angeles) Part V

During the past week, JR (featured) has been hitting the L.A. streets with his signature photographs while at the same time continuing his “Wrinkles In The City” campaign (covered here, here, here and here). Organized by Daniel Salin, this recent JR tour ended with three murals put up by the French photographer around different parts of the Downtown Los Angeles district. AM recently visited an exhibition before it closed at Fredericks & Freiser in New York featuring new work from Steve Gianakos. Since the 70s, the painter has been known to mix vulgarity with the iconic styles of 1950s children’s books leading to a smirk, shaking of the head, or reddening of the cheeks when viewed by his audiences. Kehinde Wiley Portrait of Santigold On New Album Cover

Take a look at this cover art for Santigold’s new album Master of My Make-Believe set to be released on May 1st. Along with her photographed conceptually as a Bond-girl and mafia Don, you can also see her painted as an army officer in the background by Kehinde Wiley. The signature stye in which the singer is rendered references 18th-century British artist Joshua Reynolds’s painting of Banastre Tarleton titled Portrait of an Officer, and is Wiley’s first painting of a woman ever. This Saturday, March 3, in New York, the Last Rites Gallery will be hosting another iteration of their Dark Pop exhibition. Tonight in Los Angeles at Taschen, fans of Mark Ryden will have a chance to check out his newest book in person as well as get it signed by the man himself. The impressive publication, Pinxit, is a comprehensive 366 page survey of Ryden’s 20 year career and is currently available as the Collector’s Edition of 1,000 ($1000). Video / Streets: ABOVE (Cape Town)

After going big on multiple walls (here, here, and here) during Art Basel Miami Week ahead of a sold out showing, ABOVE (interviewed) has surfaced in Cape Town with some new work. The prolific Bay Area-based artist’s latest wall is for Origin Wines, a South African winery that leads one of the largest Fairtrade projects globally. Entitled What Goes Up, the footage of it going up is a nice primer on one of ABOVE’s techniques – projection. Some photos after the jump…
