Previews: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles)

On May 6th, BEYOND THE STREETS will open its doors in Los Angeles (1667 N Main St), an immersive survey of graffiti and street art, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Art in the Streets (covered) in 2011. This is not surprisingly seeing as Roger Gastman was an associate curator of that show back then at the MOCA, and will be the main curator of this new exhibition. Working with a roster of over 100+ artists, 40,000+ sq. ft. of industrial indoor and outdoor space has been converted […]

Previews: Tiffany Bozic – “The Five Elements” @ Talon Gallery

Tomorrow night (May 4th) at Talon Gallery in Portland, Tiffany Bozic will be opening a show alongside new work from Josh Keyes (covered). Her new pieces are centered around the idea of The Five Elements (Air, Earth, Fire, Water, Easther) of nature, filled with creatures of the wild rendered with exquisite detail and created with a geometric shape in mind. You can head here for an thoughtful explanation behind each piece – for example, the piece seen first is Earth – the cubed cross section of the evolutionary […]

Frieze Week NYC ’18: First Look

With the Frieze Art Fair opening in New York this week, AM made the trek out to Randall’s Island to see what the contemporary art world had to offer. Featuring 190 galleries from 30 countries and a new layout, the event certainly had something for all art lovers out there, no matter their taste. Here is a first look at some of the artists, works, and booths that caught our eye as we braved the heat to bring photos for your perusal.

Streets: PichiAvo (Lisbon)

While in town for their current solo show at Underdogs Gallery (more on this later), PichiAvo completed a stunning new mural near the Santa Apolónia railway station utilizing their signature palette. Soaring high into the urban landscape, the multi-story mural from the Spanish duo features their signature remix of ancient Greek and Roman sculptures with their love for graffiti. With deft spraycan control, the two carefully layered urban scrawl with a classic marble bust, leading to a beautifully textured and complex wall painting. Photo credit: José […]

Previews: Lonac – “Strange Tales” @ Thinkspace

For his first solo show with Thinkspace Gallery opening up on this Friday night (May 4th), Lonac has prepared a new body of work entitled Strange Tales. Choosing a title that fits nicely with his surreal imagery, the Croatian artist’s new paintings are typical of his oeuvre, snapshots in time that appear to be taken from some mysterious adventure. Informed by his time on the streets, the Zagreb-based artist also draws influence from his love of comics, music, film, and an immersion in skateboard culture. […]

Previews: Mark Drew – “What Goes On?” @ Spoke Art (New York)

On May 5th, Spoke Art’s New York location will be opening a new solo show from Mark Drew entitled What Goes On? The new body of work continues the Tokyo-based Australian artist’s instantly recognizable mashups of Peanuts comics and 90s rap lyrics, like the painting seen above featuring the rhymes of Nas. That piece, Maintain (Nas), will also released as a limited edition screen print and be available in person at the opening. Discuss Mark Drew here.

Upcoming: Sam Flores – “Where’d the Wild Things Go” @ 111 Minna

This Friday night (May 4th), Sam Flores (interviewed) will be opening a new exhibition at 111 Minna in San Francisco entitled Where’d the Wild Things Go. It’s been a minute since we last saw a show from the locally-based artist so it’s nice seeing the familiar elements of his imagery – the long faced costumed girls, oversized hands, ships, and more. Take a look at a few more preview images down below… Discuss Sam Flores here.

Upcoming: BEYOND THE STREETS (Los Angeles) – Curated by Roger Gastman

In 2011, Roger Gastman was an associate curator of Art in the Streets, the first major US museum (at MOCA) survey of graffiti and street art. As one of the world’s foremost authorities on these art forms and movements, he returns to curate a groundbreaking follow-up to the show, called BEYOND THE STREETS. The spectacular exhibition will include over 100 artists (including perhaps one very big surprise one?) showcasing paintings, sculpture, photography, and installations (including a re-creation, in partnership with adidas Skateboarding, of the famous Venice Pavilion), on more […]
