Openings: “Eve” @ Subliminal Projects

A couple weeks ago, the gallery that Obey built hosted an group exhibition of nine female artists whose work was collectively entitled Eve. Judy Chicago, Mary Beth Edelson, Kim McCarty, Ayanah Moor, Alex Prager, Lisa Steele, Swoon, Stella Vine and Hannah Wilke are a diverse group of artists stemming from the era of the 1970’s to the present and each brought their unique touch to Subliminal Projects exploring their perceptions of femininity. Openings: Saner – “Sequestro Express” @ Mid City Arts

Last Friday, Mid City Arts in the heart of Los Angeles hosted an unique exhibition by Mexican artist Saner entitled Sequestro Express. The title of the show is translated to Express Kidnapping, a subject that certainly has significance in certain Central and South American countries as well as Mexico of course. Most of the artwork no doubt will be long gone by the time you read this as it was given away free by the artist. More photos by Birdman after the jump…

Teaser: David Stoupakis – “Walking Within These Shadows” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Master of the dark arts, David Stoupakis, will be returning to the Corey Helford this Saturday night, August 6th, to open his third solo exhibition there. Entitled Walking Within These Shadows, the new body of work will be more personal in nature drawing from his life experiences and featuring a more somber color palette.  Stoupakis will be showing alongside UK-based digital artist Tom Bagshaw. FAME Festival ’11: Vhils

Plaster, concrete, paper, wood – where other people see construction materials and tools, the visionary Vhils sees art. After working on a wall outside of the Post No Bills gallery in the States in conjunction with the European Bailout Show (covered), the Lisbon-based street artist traveled to Italy to do his part for the annual Fame Fest. Take a look at some of the other pieces he produced while in town as well as a video of some of the shenanigans that went down.

Openings: Dalek & Greg Lamarche – “Geometric Balance” @ Show & Tell Gallery

A couple weeks ago, the Show & Tell Gallery in Toronto hosted new work from Dalek (interviewed) and Greg Lamarche (interviewed). Masters of structured typography and geometric shapes, the two displayed impeccable linework as well as balanced compositions in the paintings they brought. Streets: Shepard Fairey (Copenhagen) Part I

As we draw closer to the Friday night opening of  Shepard Fairey’s (featured) show Your Ad Here at V1 Gallery, we will bringing you some front line pics as he and the Obey crew beautify walls in and around Copenhagen.  This particular peace dove mural was their first effort and located on Jagtvej 69, 2200 Nørrebro for those in town. Streets: Ericailcane (Rome)

Not to be outdone by fellow compatriot and frequent collaborator Blu, street illustrator Ericailcane also headed out on his own to work on some solo murals. This new wall in Rome was painted in the Laurentino 38 neighborhood, a downtrodden area that has seen some restoration projects in recent months commissioned by LabUrba. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see more from “Eric the Dog” throughout the rest of summer. Preview: “Summer Invitational” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Summer group shows during the traditional down time for galleries is a good way to gauge the direction a gallery is going. For their 2011 Annual Summer Invitational, slated to open on August 10th, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York will be featuring an international group of artists including Daniel Martin Diaz, Eric Fortune, Hello Monsters, Edwin Ushiro, Dick Chicken, Melissa Haslam, Above, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Yuko Shimizu, Ashley Wood, Jennifer Delilah and Meryl Smith. Openings: Anthony Lister @ HVW8

Last Friday evening, HVW8 gallery unveiled new works by Australian-born artist Anthony Lister (interviewed). For this project, Junk Food Art House teamed up with the artist in bringing the theme of the lost superhero to the forefront. The exhibit put a cap to the three-week long venture which had Lister’s posters placed all across the city of Los Angeles.
