Streets: Greg “Craola” Simkins x Lyte (Redondo Beach)

After a successful showing that opened last month in Los Angeles (covered), Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) went back to his roots recently and painted something on the streets of Redondo Beach. Collaborating with Lyte, a fellow crew member from CBS/WAI, the duo beautified the wall with their letterforms while throwing out a shout out to 2SHAE in the process. Streets: World Roundup (Oct 13 – Jan 12)

During the winter months, we typically see a slowdown of street activity due to the colder weather. After a brief hiatus, our Streets: World Roundup feature returns with a summary of the intervening months. Leading things off is this Invader (who has a new website) piece that is seen in a new light in the wake of the tragic events that went down recently in the French artist’s home base (photo by tofz4u). Other notable walls come from ROA – Germany (source), Herakut – USA, […]

Je Suis Charlie (Part II)

With some of the perpetrators behind the horrific acts of terror in Paris brought to justice, we can now voice a small sigh a relief although the art world is still reeling from those targeted at Charlie Hedbo. With the weekly newspaper determined to carry on despite what happened, artists around the world continue to show their support for freedom of expression including an interesting contribution from Ai Weiwei (seen above). Art Focus: Odeith

We recently came across the work of Odeith and his mind-bending form of anamorphic graffiti that seems to leap out at you from certain vantage points. The Lisbon-based artist operated a tattoo parlor for a while but has since returned to art full time including commissioned work with brands such as London Shell, Kingsmill, the Coca-Cola Company, Estradas de Portugal, Samsung, Sport Lisboa e Benfica (football club) and several Portuguese city halls such as Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Câmara Municipal de Oeiras, amongst others. Take […]

Long time AM friend Poesia launches 886 Geary Gallery this week with an exhibition by Filippo Minelli entitled Nothing To Say. As well as being the new space’s inaugural exhibition, this will be Italian interventionist’s first solo presentation in the United States. Minelli’s photographs have been taken locally in California and the San Francisco Bay Area in preparation for this exhibition. Taking his concept of Silence/Shapes, Minelli uses coloured smoke bombs and recontextualizes protest symbolism within silent environments. The juxtaposition of the brightly coloured smoke clouds within […]

Je Suis Charlie

With the world’s attention on Paris after the tragic events that unfolded today, artists around the world have shown their solidarity with the French people by doing what they do best – making art. Inspired by the phrase “Je Suis Charlie” or “I Am Charlie,” creatives like Hanksy above have shown their support for freedom of expression with “cartoons” of their own. Take a look at a small sampling below…                               […]
