Openings: Steve More – ‘Subtraction’ @ Unruly Gallery

Edinburgh based Steve More recently opened his solo exhibition entitled Subtraction at Amsterdam’s Unruly Gallery. More’s abstract work in his Syntax series, which has been developing over the last couple of years, takes centre stage for this exhibition of new work, and his creative process of applying and subsequently revealing layers presents a level of chaos in the background of his very controlled reductive technique. The clean geometric lines carved into the surface of the artwork present a beautiful symmetry and the perfect foil to the random nature […]

Patrick Martinez for Playboy

Los Angeles-based artist Patrick Martinez was recently asked to work on a project for Playboy’s App. Taking his signature neon work and his urban aesthetic, he built four sets for Miss May 2010 Playmate Kassie Logsdon to interact with. Take a look at some stills and the video below, shot by photographer Jared Ryder, as the creative process was throughly explained by Martinez and footage from the shoot is revealed. Discuss Patrick Martinez here.

Upcoming: Neck Face – “No Mercy For The Weak” @ New Image Art

On September 7th, nasty Neck Face (interviewed) returns to West Hollywood (see 2012) for a showing at New Image Art. No Mercy For The Weak features new paintings and limited editions from the provocative artist featuring his demon portraits and “extensive study and research” of bar room practices. Also included in the exhibition apparently is an alter to the Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez) who recently died in prison and also happens to be one is Neck Face’s favorite inspirations. Never one to shy away from controversy and black humor, […]

Streets: KAWS @ BAM (Brooklyn)

The artist that took MTV’s Video Music Awards by storm (covered) is back in the streets of Brooklyn! Well, sorta. Before launching himself into the world of fine art and working with prestigious galleries such as Galerie Perrotin (here & here) and Honor Fraser (here & here), KAWS got started in the 90’s leaving his mark on NYC’s urban landscape with his signature graffiti tags and ad interventions. Now, he makes a prominent return outdoors with a fresh new mural coming up in Downtown Brooklyn, across […]

Streets: Wooster Collective 10 year Anniversary (DUMBO)

The recent extensive showcase of street art put together by the Wooster Collective for their ten year anniversary exhibition (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was just the tip of the iceburg. In the streets of Williamsburg & Dumbo, the collective got ahold of some prime wall space for some of the artists involved to work on. We stopped by Brooklyn’s DUMBO district to catch artists such as Shepard Fairey, DALeast, Faith 47, Eltono and MOMO put their signature styles on full display for the community to enjoy. […]

Streets: Cleon Peterson (Los Angeles)

Last weekend, Cleon Peterson took on a large scale mural in downtown Los Angeles. Coming off a great summer exhibition across the pond at London’s The Outsiders’ Soho gallery, Cleon kept his acerbic and raw edge as he composed a hard hitting piece featuring his signature “Brinksmen.” Created over the span of two days, the wall was painted with a bloody looking color scheme making it a fresh eye-catcher for the people of LA. Check out a detailed look below… Photos credit: @zagnutz Discuss Cleon Peterson here.

Preview: “Buddy System Invitational” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On September 5th, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland will be opening a group exhibition (curated by Sven Davis) with an interesting premise. Of course, what we will be looking forward to is also to see how the show will be installed but check out some preview images below (and one of Scott Listfield’s […]

Studio Visit: Finok

Brazilian artist Finok aka Raphael Sagarra recently let us have a peek inside his home & studio in Sao Paulo, to have a look at some new paintings he’s been working on recently. The young artist got introduced to the art world on the streets of his city back in 2002 when he noticed some kids painting graffiti in the street. He was intrigued by this creative illegal activity and quickly got into the “graffiti game” himself. A few years later he became part of the infamous Vlok […]

After working with Absolut Vodka on their limited bottle design, having his art reproduced on the Californian Kenwood Vineyard label, and being named as one of the 100 most influential artists by Complex magazine, Kinsey is focused on his 2 shows for the year. This one, and a special pop-up solo show at FFDG in San Francisco on […]

It’s time for another Rewind feature where we bring to you some of the videos that caught our eye recently. First up is a artist focus where the Arbor Collective visits Dave Kinsey at his home studio in the Western slopes of the Sierras where we get glimpses of his workspace and paintings. Also overlaid is an insightful interview where he touches on his upbringing, being out on the streets doing street art & graffiti, his use of the color orange, the impact of the internet, the […]
