Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Basel Highlights – Part 2

Without a doubt the sun of the art fair solar system that is Basel Week Miami is Art Basel. Concentrating on just this fair and dedicating our energy to catching it in its entirety including the two hundred plus blue chip galleries present took AM two full days (see day one). It was definitely worth the time spent as we observed million of dollars and flowing from collectors into the art world. What was interesting is the more notable influence of a younger generation artists […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: JR x André

Continuing our survey of the streets in Miami, another interesting wall was collaboratively worked on by JR (featured) and André. The two French street artists combined their two styles – the signature photographic eye from JR and the stick figures of André – into a welcome addition to the Design District. JR was in town also for his book release with Jose Parla at The Standard and Mr. A was in town for his Love Graffiti project. Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss JR here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: The Miami Project – Highlights

AM found time to visit another fair in Midtown Miami, the inaugural Miami Project earlier this week. Unlike most new fairs, we were impressed by their solid lineup of respected galleries and great facilities. This is perhaps this is due to the experience of the fair’s organizers, artMRKT Productions, who have already held fairs Houston, San Francisco, and the Hamptons. Check out the selection of works below and the a piece from Mel Bochner above… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: RISK Collaborations (Shepard Fairey) – Part I

Those who passed by the Overtown area of Miami while in the city for Basel Week Miami will no doubt have seen RISK’s deconstructive color washes on many of the buildings in the area. Using the area as his personal canvas, the LA-based writer has enlisted many of his friends for collaborative murals including Shepard Fairey in the piece seen above. We’ll have more for you soon as other notables like Mear One, Smash, Anthony Lister, Gregory Siff, and more get up on backgrounds courtesy of Risky. […]

Jonathan Darby – “Congo” @ White Walls

British artist Jonathan Darby recently transformed San Francisco’s White Walls gallery to give the feel of the war torn city of Goma, which is located in the Congo with the population of around a million people. The installation consists of paintings, sounds, photography and film that spotlight the conditions the children of the area live in. Darby is currently the creative director of AptART and has previously worked with orphans, street kids and former children soldiers in the area, doing paintings and setting up workshops. During […]

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Herakut

AM will be checking out the PULSE art fair later today (one of the many satellite events during Basel Week Miami). Those planning to attend at some point this week will also see this huge Herakut mural soaring above the horizon across from the entrance of the fair. The wall is a continuation of the German duo’s ambitious Giant Storybook Project that we recently featured. Make sure you check it out while you are in town… Discuss Herakut here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: SCOPE – Highlights

This morning, we stopped by to check out one of the other satellite fairs in Miami – SCOPE. The large complex featured many of the galleries and artists that we are familiar with as well as some new discoveries. Also attached to the fair was its usual partner – Art Asia which we will cover in a followup article.  For now, check out all the images including a stunning portrait from Sas Christian (ab0ve). Basel Week Miami ’12 / Streets: Dabs Myla x Greg “Craola” Simkins x Witnes

While AM has been running around at all the various fairs, we have also been monitoring the street activity, which continues to be strong during this year’s Basel Week Miami. One of the murals that caught our eye was the collaboration between Dabs Myla, Greg “Craola” Simkins, and Witnes in the Wynwood Walls area sponsored by LRG. Check this worthy addition to the Miami landscape below – too bad there are cars in the way… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’12: CONTEXT Art Miami – Highlights

Despite with the brazen display of jacked Banksy’s at the new CONTEXT Art Miami, there was a pretty good selection of work displayed. As with most fairs, there were artists that we recognized which have been featured on the pages of AM before and also new artists to be discovered that we were excited about. For example, check out the Jorge Santos piece (seen above) that was at the 101/Exhibit booth (more on the rest of their lineup later). For, now enjoy a overview of […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: “Banksy Out of CONTEXT” @ CONTEXT Art Miami

Sure to rile up true street art fans everywhere, the CONTEXT Art Miami fair has gone ahead and approved the display of works purported to be pieces from Banksy (no Pest Control authentication obviously) taken from around the world (Israel, England, Los Angeles and San Francisco). Arranged by gallerist Stephan Keszler of Southampton, the works are placed strategically throughout the complex of tents, perhaps used by the fair to garner attention as it is a new offshoot of Art Miami. The showing appears to attempt to deflect blame […]
