Streets: Banksy in SF (Part IV)

Apparently Banksy has been real busy in San Francisco as another five new stencils have been discovered (see previous six here). Combining business with pleasure, the stealthy street artist has hit up famous spots like the Fisherman’s Wharf and Alcatraz. We can’t remember the last time Banksy has gifted one city with so many street pieces, so fans in the Bay Area are definitely the subject of some worldwide jealousy at the moment. All the images after the jump…

Take some time out to check […]

Openings: Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade – NYC edition

This past weekend, Faile and Bast opened the New York version of their famed “Deluxx Fluxx Arcade” show. The pop-up gallery located in the LES (Lower East Side) of the city was subject to many rumors and discussions during this busy week of art in the Big Apple. Many who thought this show was imported from the recent blockbuster UK arcade show were pleasantly surprised to discover that the artists created a fresh set of machines/installations for this unique vision of one of our favorite childhood past […]

Openings: Oakland Museum of California with Group Show (including Barry Mcgee)

Tipped off by the good people at Hi-Fructose to a great show opening at the Oakland Museum of California, we were please to see that one of our friends, gamma888, had a nice photoset of pics from the show (especially of the sick Barry McGee installation). After two years of remodeling, the museum is reopening their Gallery of California Art to the public and for our readers in the Bay Area, definitely stop by to take a look for yourself. You can see more pics […]

Banksy compensates rock band for name: “Exit Through The Gift Shop”

With Banksy’s recent documentary Exit Through The Gift Shop premiering with much success and fan fare accross the world (coverage here), wouldn’t it be a pain to share a name with this recently well-known film?  Well, for the rock band formerly known as Exit Through The Gift Shop it becomes a blessing in disguise as Banksy took the time to make a “double mattress” size canvas for the band with a new name of Brace Yourself, which has the Grim Reaper clutching the wheel of […]

Banksy Included in 2010 TIME 100

Two names familiar to AM readers, and no doubt to mainstream popular culture aficionados today, is Shepard Fairey and Banksy.  Today, we learned that Banksy was included in TIME Magazine’s TIME100 list, featuring 100 of the most influential people “who most affect our world”.  And the one who wrote the description to his entry?  Shepard Fairey, who took time off of his East Coast muraling, speaking, and preparation for his upcoming exhibition opening to pen something for his mischievous friend. See what Fairey had to […]

Streets / Preview: Blek le Rat

Parisian street art pioneer Blek Le Rat has landed in San Francisco and yesterday afternoon blessed the exterior of the Tenderloin-located White Walls Gallery with a site-specific take on one of his “Beggars” stencils, similar to the works London residents may remember from ’07.  His joint show with the artist Above will debut this Saturday at White Walls alongside Hush at Shooting Gallery. Street installation pictures and show preview after the jump.

Openings: Rooms @ Scion Space

On Saturday night, AM attended the opening of “Rooms” at Scion Space (previewed). The show, curated by Roger Gastman, certainly brought us back to the old school days of youth.  A wide array of nostalgic goodness such as Laser Tag, VHS lined living rooms, Michael Jordan & Dream Team posters, elementary school desks, bus stops, gothic throwbacks and even an outdoor street/play area were included.  There was literally something for everyone to reminisce on.  The artists: Adam Wallacavage, Bill Daniel, Chris Stain, Dan Monick & […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for April 29 – May 2

NYC is the place to be this weekend – Ryden, Julie Heffernan, Faile/Bast, and Shepard Fairey – just a stunning lineup of shows offering something for every taste. Shepard’s big show at Deitch is by far leading the charge – the turnout for this show should really keep the local officials on their toes considering it’s the end of an era as well, with this being the final show at Deitch’s space before he turns his attention to MOCA in Los Angeles. This is one […]
