Streets: Conor Harrington for Dublin Contemporary

After gifting his homeland three cowboy themed murals back in June (here, here, and here), it looks like Conor Harrington (interviewed) has returned to Ireland for another wall. This time, he hits up Dublin with a large new piece entitled Dead Meat, painted for this year’s Dublin Contemporary. For those in London, look for Conor’s work for Lazarides’ minotaur themed event in the Old Vic Tunnels coming up next month. More photos of this mural after the jump…

Streets: Retna (Miami)

After the pulling the cover off of a controversial collaborative mural with fellow graffiti artist Risk a couple weeks back, Retna (featured) bounced down to Miami last week to get a leg up on his fellow artists for this year’s Wynwood Walls. Originally conceived of by Jeffrey Deitch as a clever way to revitalize the debilitated Wynwood Arts District during Art Basel Miami, the annual outdoor art gathering has blossomed into an all out assault by graffiti legends, street artists, and contemporary art figures alike […]

Streets: Invader (São Paulo) Part II

Last month we brought you coverage of Invader getting up down in São Paulo. It appears either the Parisian artist fell in love with the Brazilian street art mecca and stuck around for the past few week. Or he was so pleased with his previous invasion that he quickly returned for another attack. Whatever it may be, the master of the mosaic has bestowed another round of his 8-bit minions scattered throughout the South American country once again in some pretty impressive and brazen locations. […]

Streets: SABER – “Skytagging” (Los Angeles)

If you read AM this morning, you would have been tipped off by SABER (interviewed) to something happening in the skies around noon time today. So, if you were in downtown Los Angeles and looked up, you would have seen something interesting. Besides trying out a novel approach to tagging utilizing the technique of skywriting with shoutouts to Art Work Rebels (AWR) and Mad Society Kings (MSK) as well as some fellow crew members, the socially conscious writer also planned the event to protest the […]

Streets: Miquel Barceló – “Gran Elefandret” (NY)

If you ever wanted to see one of Miquel Barceló’s precariously perched elephant sculptures in person, here’s your chance if you are in New York. The impossibly balanced bronze sculpture entitled Gran Elefandret from the Spanish artist is now on display through May 2012 in Union Square and is 26 feet high. The gravity defying pachyderm is presented courtesy of Marlborough Gallery and the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Art in the Parks program. More photos after the jump via the gallery…

Teasers: Saber – Skywriting (Los Angeles)

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s Saber?! No seriously… Today at noon (PST) graffiti legend, SABER (interviewed) will be taking his talents to a whole new stratosphere. Utilizing several planes (think Blue Angel level coordination) the renowned artist will be skywriting his messages and images for all who care to tilt their head upwards. His target will be downtown Los Angeles and that’s all we can say for now. So if you’re lucky enough to be in the City of […]

Overtime: Sept 12 – Sept 18

Anthony Kiedis takes Ed Ruscha on a ride down Sunset Blvd. Former art dealer accused of selling forged paintings said to be by Monet, Rothko, and others. Renoir piece stolen in Houston. Roman Abramovich’s new art museum in St Petersburg will include a giant outdoor hot tub. Don’t miss the final week of foster + partners – the art of architecture in Hong Kong. Jenny Saville paints pregnant women for her Gagosian show. The place to go for artists to get material for their sculptures. […]

FAME Festival ’11: Sam3

In our continuing coverage of this year’s FAME Festival, we now bring you the work of Sam3. Last seen in Poland and Madrid with his more traditional, nature-inspired murals, the Spanish street artist tried something completely different in the streets of Grottaglie. In perhaps a deliberate – or not – riff on VOINA’s infamous Dick Captured by KGB street action, the abstracted lines of spray paint assemble together like a jigsaw puzzle when viewed from an upstairs bathroom window, where the sizable piece is realized […]

Art Focus: Jessica Stewart

This week’s Art Focus is on Melbourne based Jessica Stewart. What particularly drew our attention initially were her melding of urban objects and nature, as well as her hazy and dreamy portraits rendered juxtaposed with plants and animals. “Using pencil, paint and pastel she draws ships, homes, animals among all other sorts of symbolic objects to represent a bond, a freedom or maybe an escape from their current situation.” For those looking to see her work in person, Fine Grime Gallery will be representing her […]
