Armory Week ’14: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we make a point to catch during Armory Week is Scope. Hosting a variety of genres, the event featured a diverse mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with here on AM. One surprise caught at the fair was the appearance of a freight truck door allegedly tagged by Banksy during his high profile artist residency in New York City. It was interesting to catch the trend […]

Art Focus: Fabio Magalhaes

This week’s Art Focus sees us taking a look at the unsettling work of Fabio Magalhaes. The young artist hails from Brazil, where he is based in the city of Salvador, also where he studied at the Federal University of Bahia. Working primarily in oils, Magalhaes paints as though he was a serial killer, with images of torture and body parts, and certainly it would be concerning if he used true photo references. So, we will just assume it comes from his imagination, studying anatomy textbooks, or […]

Mike Giant x Major Lazer / Pharrell – “Aerosol Can” Music Video

Mazer Lazer recently unveiled their latest music video Aerosol Can featuring Pharrell and the artistic stylings of Mike Giant. In the footage, you can see the heavily tattooed (last covered by us in 2012) Bay Area artist showing off his calligraphy skills as he writes out the song lyrics, augmented by graphics. Look for more from Giant coming up in July in a showing at Denver’s Black Book Gallery. Discuss Mike Giant here.

Recap: Joe Sorren – “Knock Three Times” @ AFA Gallery

For those who missed the Joe Sorren (featured) exhibition which just closed at AFA in New York, here are some photos you can peruse from when we stopped by last month. Returning to the gallery that showed him in NYC a year ago (covered), the gifted painter presented twelve new oil paintings collectively entitled Knock Three Times. Seeing Sorren’s expressive paintings in person certainly reminds one of how emotive the gestures of his characters are and how his delicate brushstrokes can create such fantastic dream-like imagery. Discuss Joe Sorren here.
