Auctions: Giacometti’s “Walking Man I” Sculpture Sells at Sotheby’s for Record $104.3M

At Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in London today (Feb 3), this Alberto Giacometti sculpture sold for £65 million or $104.3 million. The “Walking Man” is a mottled bronze and stands six-foot tall. Its sale is a record for the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. Pablo Picasso’s “Boy with a Pipe” was the previous record holder. It sold for $104 million in 2004 at Sotheby’s in New York. More after the jump…

The hottest twins in the art world landed in Milan for their much anticipated second show with Galleria Patricia Armocida entitled “Nos Braços de um Anjo” (In the Arms of an Angel), which opened last night. Os Gemeos premiered their latest body of work, consisting of beautiful canvas paintings, sculptures and of course their famed installations for the lucky folks of Italy. Last week, important shows for two young artists, Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani opened jointly at the Carmichael Gallery (their last show before moving to the new Culver City location). Mark Jenkins brought many of his classics indoors such as the paper tape carousel horse and faceless hooded mannequins. In addition, the gallery setting allowed him to remix and play a little with his repertoire like with his usual multi-limbed bodies formed into a side table. This year’s London Art Fair, held from January 13-17, attracted over 23,000 visitors and featured a wide variety of art to hold their attention. No matter how many art fairs we see or attend, we can never get enough of tremendous amount of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and other art on display – buffet style. A couple weeks ago, Thinkspace hosted “A Cry For Help,” a show that donated part of the proceeds to support Born Free USA & the Animal Protection Institute.
