Upcoming: Tom Sach – “Boombox Retrospective, 1999–2016” @ Brooklyn Museum

Tomorrow night (April 21st) in New York, Tom Sachs will be sharing his collection of bricolage sculptural pieces inspired by the iconic boomboxes of the 70s and 80s (also see SXSW ’15). Boombox Retrospective, 1999–2016 at the Brooklyn Museum features eighteen works that illustrate the sculptor’s ability to recreate everyday objects with re-purposed materials. Activating the space, the pieces will be programmed with playlists that go on sequentially throughout our public hours. Discuss Tom Sachs here.

This Saturday (April 23rd), Jedediah Voltz will be opening a show at Virgil Normal in Los Angeles that highlights his special skill of creating miniature “tree” houses wrapped around common household plants like succulents. Previews: Danny van Ryswyk – “Tender Loving Darkness” @ Roq La Rue

On April 7th, Seattle’s Roq La Rue will be welcoming in Danny van Ryswyk and his series of sculptures in a show entitled Tender Loving Darkness. The Amsterdam-based artist uses an interesting process to create his morbid works, starting digitally with a 3D program. He then prints these out with a 3D printer and meticulously hand paints each one in a process that can take weeks. Along with these dark sculptural renditions, van Ryswyk also has included some prints in the exhibition. Discuss Danny van Ryswyk here.

Armory Week ’16: Armory Art Fair

Earlier this month, New York City welcomed in the Armory Art Show. This annual event showcases some of the brightest names and current trends in contemporary art (@ Pier 94) with a portion dedicated to some of the classics from art history (@ Pier 92). Daniel Arsham currently has on display his first solo presentation in Japan at Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo, also his second in Asia following his show at Galerie Perrotin in Hong Kong last autumn (covered). Titled My First Show in Japan, Year 2044, the exhibition introduces his signature concept of “Fictional Archaeology” to local art lovers. Showing: Eric Yahnker – “Noah’s Yacht” @ Zevitas Marcus

Last weekend, Zevitas Marcus in Los Angeles hosted the opening of a new solo show from Eric Yahnker. Noah’s Yacht features works created from colored pencils and graphite on paper, rendered with the locally-based artist’s continued clever commentary on issues that afflict our society today touching on topics like the current election cycle and police violence. Rounding out the show are various sculptural works, installations, and conceptual pieces all showing his versatility and knowledge of pop culture and the social-political climate, often times intermixing the two. Eleven years since his last Australian solo show, Barry McGee returns “down under” for a one night event. In conjunction with RVCA, this Thursday night, the 17th of March, Sydney’s Monster Children magazine will be opening (and closing) his exclusive solo show at their exhibition space MC06 in Camperdown. Last month Slow Culture moved from LA’s Highland Park to Chinatown, and on March 4th, they opened the PDFW: Performance. Drawing. Film. Writing. group show by THE DFW crew.
