Michael Johansson – “Familiar Abstractions” @ Vigeland-Museet

Last week, we brought a look inside the studio of Michael Johansson in Malmø where he was busy preparing for his show at the Vigeland-Museet in Oslo, Norway. We now have some photos of the recently closes said exhibition, Familiar Abstractions, which features the tetris-like created cubes made from everyday objects that the Swedish artist is known for. Along with these color-coded assemblages, Johansson also filled in some doorways in with some installation work as well as displayed some grid-like sculptural pieces from rack-like materials. Coming up this weekend on May 18th, the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin will be opening a new show from Anish Kapoor, one the most influential sculptors of his generation. The exhibition, his first major one in the city, will feature about 70 works spanning his diverse range of mediums including stone, steel, glass, wax, PVC skins, and high-tech material. It was a night to remember. Last week, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles opened its doors to an extensive survey of Gary Baseman’s career and life entitled The Door Is Always Open. Friends, family, fellow artists, collectors, admirers, and well wishers alike attended to show their respects to the pervasive artist and his illustrious accomplishments. Openings: Keith Haring Retrospective – “The Political Line” @ MAM Paris

Last weekend, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (MAM) opened a new retrospective of the late Keith Haring’s work entitled The Political Line. On display were a staggering number of pieces, over 250 paintings and sculptural works with a focus on the importance of Haring’s art as visual activism, highlighting the diversity of his socio-political views. The exhibition will be on view through August 18th in Paris and is made possible with the support of Citizens of Humanity. Discuss Keith Haring here.

Later this month (April 19th), the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (MAM) will be hosting a massive retrospective for the late, great Keith Haring. Starting on April 11th, Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station will be the next location to host KAWS’ 16-feet-tall COMPANION (PASSING THROUGH) sculpture. Fans of Barry McGee in Texas will be happy to know the installation of his latest museum show is already underway for the opening this weekend. Held at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, site of the KAWS show a year ago (covered), the exhibition will feature much of what the influential San Francisco-based artist is known for.
