Basel Week Miami ’10: Retna – “Silver Lining” @ Primary Projects

Last night, before heading out to the requisite evening parties at Art Basel, we stopped by Primary Projects to check out the street calligraphic stylings of Retna (featured). His signature script in different manifestations infused the space with the West Coast aesthetic including the walls, floors, and doors reminiscent of his immersive show at Riviera and Riviera in August (covered). The impressive new body of work included large pieces on panels, found objects, and overwritten photographs. Fellow fans and notables in the street scene like […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Barry McGee @ Ratio 3

Now that the initial excitement of preview day (covered) at Art Basel Miami Beach is over with, we can continue bringing you a more thorough look-see at some of the significant booths at the main fair. Exhibiting with San Francisco based Ratio 3 (teased) is influential street artist Barry McGee. Filling the bulk of the booth’s real estate in dramatic fashion were a series of large-scale clusters from the Bay Area icon, deftly composing the mixed-media wall installations synonymous with his gallery work. Rounding out […]

Openings: Todd James “Infinite Lessons” @ A.L.I.C.E. Gallery

Fans of Todd James weathered the snow to show their support at the opening of his solo exhibition Infinite Lessons at A.L.I.C.E. Gallery in Brussels. Presenting his crude sense of humor in trademark fashion, James explores controversial topics of sex and war as only he can. The gravity of these issues is offset with the tongue in cheek levity of his illustrative style and comedic compositions, perfectly juxtaposing the heavy with the light. The opening also served as a first crack at his debut sculptural […]

Basel Week Miami ’10: Sanrio’s “Small Gift Miami” 50th Anniversary Celebration

With the pleasure of attending the event together with Shepard Fairey and his family, AM headed over to the opening of Small Gift Miami (previewed) for a bit of cross-generational fun during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Sanrio. Coinciding with Art Basel Week, the Floridian version of last months successful group exhibition and mobile pop-up shop in Los Angeles (covered) lived up to it’s predecessor, with attendees enjoying a host of the hottest artists of the day reinvent Sanrio’s timeless characters. Curators Roger Gastman and […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Art Basel First Look

After months of anticipation, the time has finally come for the curtains to be drawn back and the show to begin at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach. Prior to the public opening tomorrow, December 2nd, today marked Vernissage day, which allowed exclusive press access to the massive Miami Beach Convention Center. The excitement was palpable, as we enjoyed scouring the grounds and taking in all the artwork lining the walls from some of the most prestigious galleries the world over. Considering this is just […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Emmanuel Perrotin Private View and Dinner

One of the first things we did yesterday when we arrived in Miami was attend the Emmanuel Perrotin party and opening reception at their gallery space. The event centered around Daniel Arsham’s sixth solo exhibition, Alter, with three new body of works – Objects from Antiquity, Push Puppets and Pixel Clouds. Other works from the gallery’s impressive roster of artists surrounded the AM crew as well as we enjoyed some art gazing, dinner, and mingling with other like-minded attendees to kick off our Art Basel […]

Openings: Kenny Scharf & Dearraindrops – “Hot Glue Hullabaloo” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended the opening of Kenny Scharf & Dearraindrop’s Hot Glue Hullabaloo at The Hole Gallery. The collaborative show between Kenny and the Virginia Beach collective was a logical one – both are known for their creative and colorful approaches to create works outside the box. Kenny transformed the inside of The Hole into a replica of the “cosmic cavern” from his home which has the effect of transported viewers back to the happy and trippy days of the 60’s & 70’s. Derraindrop chimed […]

Basel Week Miami ’10 – Scope Art Fair

As we bring our previews and teasers for Art Basel Week here at AM to an end, we are sure you are just as anxious as we are to get into the fairs and onto the streets to see what we have all been waiting for. We start by bringing you an pictorial overview of the SCOPE Art Fair (with more in-depth looks later). Overall, we thought that the works offered this year were stronger than last year’s edition and hope you agree as well. […]

Openings: Ron English – “Status Factory” @ Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion

Known for its year-round sunshine, Disneyland, and tradition of conservatism, one thing Orange County is not known for is its high caliber art exhibitions.  Recently, The Orange Coast College Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, along with Opera Gallery and Hurley came together and did their part to help shatter that cultural deficiency with a sweeping, immersive, and ambitious show by POPaganda master Ron English.  The amazing exhibition features over 100 of the artist’s works, from paintings to installations to sculptures.  Each work is amazing and […]
