Openings: FAILE – “Savage/Sacred Young Minds” @ Brooklyn Museum

Last month, the Brooklyn Museum welcomed in the locally based duo Faile (featured) for a solo show entitled Savage/Sacred Young Minds. The exhibition showed off a wide range of works from the Patrick’s including their Temple project that first made its appearance for PortugalArte ‘10, prayer wheels, large scale paintings, and more pieces all influenced by “a wide variety of sources, including American quilts, folk and Native American art, religious architecture, pulp magazines, comic books, sci-fi movie posters, adult entertainment advertisements, and storefront typography.” Included was also a revival of the Deluxx Fluxx Arcade (more on this […]

Openings: Josh Keyes & Brin Levinson – “Reclamation of Nowhere” @ Antler Gallery

Last week, Josh Keyes (interviewed) returned to the Antler Gallery for a joint showing with Brin Levinson entitled Reclamation of Nowhere. Their imagery meshed nicely together with Keyes’ creatures interacting with what may be a post-apocalyptic urban landscape and Levinson working with the same nature versus man themes but with a different atmosphere. The show runs through the 26th of this month for those in Portland who want to stop by themselves for a look. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Openings: Nosego – “Along Infinite River” @ Thinkspace Gallery

A couple weekends ago, Along Infinite River opened at the Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, a testament to the hard work and imagination of Yis Goodwin. Otherwise known as Nosego, especially for his work on the streets, the Philadelphia-base artist unveiled a collection of new vibrant paintings that put his surreal hybrids of different creatures and landscapes on display. Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Anger Management” @ Black Book Gallery

A large group of enthusiastic fans were on hand to greet Jeremy Fish (featured) during his July 3rd opening at Denver’s Black Book Gallery. The show is titled Anger Management and features 18 new pieces of work, largely inspired by his recent aneurysm and resulting need to find a way to mellow out. The Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga is hosting the first solo exhibition in a Spanish museum of Los Angeles-based artist Shepard Fairey (featured). Curated by Fernando Francés, the retrospective spans over 25 years, and features paintings, silkscreens, stencils, stickers, illustrations, collage, photographs, sculptures and works in wood and metal. With over 300 pieces, this is the largest body of work from Shep to ever be exhibited. Continuing his long collaboration with Lazarides, Ian Francis (featured) recently returned to London for the opening of his new show at the gallery’s flagship Rathbone Place location. The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer consists of new series of mixed media works that explore the coexistence of beauty and destruction in society today, rendered in the British artist’s signature mix of abstract and photorealistic techniques utilizing oil, ink, acrylic, graphite and charcoal. Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Blind Box” @ KP Projects // MKG

Just this last Saturday night, Masakatsu Sashie was at KP Projects / MKG presenting some new works in the project room, complementing Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space. Entitled Blind Box, the series of oil paintings and drawings centered on the Japanese artist’s striking spheres of manmade objects. The suspended orbs are beautifully rendered and are overlaid over urban environments speaking to ideas of globalism and universality. Over the weekend, fans of Jeff Soto (interviewed) enjoyed his first showing in Los Angeles in almost a decade. Entitled Nightgardens, the exhibition of KP Projects / MKG featured a series of new acrylic on panel and watercolor paintings incorporating some of the Riverside-based artist’s familiar characters in the midst of some adventure as well as some more abstract still-life like compositions.
