Openings: Fuco Ueda – “Odd-Eye” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, Thinkspace Gallery hosted an exhibition from Fuco Ueda entitled Odd-Eye, her second solo (see 2014) with the Culver City showspace. The beautifully rendered new works from the Japanese artist are mainly created on canvas with a few smaller pieces on paper, all featuring her characteristic lush imagery and palette. Surrounded by reoccurring motifs and symbols of death (such as chrysanthemum flowers & skeletal elements) as well as disquieting creatures, her flushed girls seem to be trapped in some sort of lurid dream world. Openings: Mark Ryden – “Cámara de las Maravilla” @ CAC Malaga

Last week, Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Malaga) in Spain hosted the first museum retrospective from Mark Ryden (interviewed) entitled Cámara de las Maryville. For those who have seen the exhibition, it certainly has been a House of Wonders with the plethora of small and large-format canvases, drawings, dioramas and sculptures on display for all to enjoy. Basel Week ’16 / Openings: Wynwood Walls Exhibition

In addition to the new murals (covered) painted at Wynwood Walls for this year’s Basel Week Miami, Goldman Global Arts also opened an exhibition at the Garden House in the complex. The group show featured original paintings and sculptural works from many of the artists who have been involved with Wynwood Walls in the past. Mode 2 opened a new exhibition, Preludes, at Galerie Openspace in Paris last Saturday. The title refers to those moments of heightened anticipation when waiting for something exceptional, like when a beat is about to drop or a B-boy is swaggering onto the stage. If the Art Basel Miami Beach (covered) is considered the main event every year during Basel Week Miami, then NADA Miami Beach is certainly the much-awaited encore (Art Basel typically opens on Weds to VIPs and NADA opens the next morning on Thurs.). The Bogota and Los Angeles-based Fabien Castanier Gallery used Basel Week Miami as an opportunity to show their roster of urban artists to the art-thirsty crowd in Wynwood with a popup exhibition. One of the venues jam-packed with goodness during Basel Week Miami was the Juxtapoz Clubhouse, a special project in conjunction between the magazine and Mana Urban Arts Project. The immersive artist retreat and exhibition space in the Wynwood District features collaborations with different artists, galleries and creatives. One of the highly anticipated satellite fairs every year during Basel Week Miami for us is the Scope Art Fair. The 16th edition of the fair returns to the sandy shores of shores of Ocean Drive with 125 international exhibitors from 22 countries and 57 cities showing their wares. After hosting a solo show by Tomoo Gokita last year (covered), Bill Brady picked three artists for a small group showing during this year’s Basel Week Miami.
