Openings: Daniel Arsham – “Fictional Archeology” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week in Hong Kong, Daniel Arsham opened a new solo show entitled Fictional Archeology at Galerie Perrotin. Included were eroded sculptures featuring the human form inspired by the mummified remains from the volcanic eruption in Pompeii in 79 A.D, a contemporary look at how we may appear in the event of a similar disaster to future archeologists. Rounding out the show was a smaller version the installation seen last year in Miami (covered), a “future archaeological dig site” of modern day items like shoes, cameras, musical instruments, and phones made from chalk. Openings: Aaron Horkey & Esao Andrews & João Ruas – “The Gilded Age” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Over the weekend, Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles opened the doors to The Gilded Age featuring new works by Aaron Horkey, Esao Andrews, and João Ruas. Co-curated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace and Horkey himself, the duo set out to put together a “dream-team” exhibition, giving it a title that harkened back to the late 19th century and the industrial revolution. Releases: Mark Jenkins – “Baby” Limited Editions

In association with the new solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) that just opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles (covered), the artist has released some limited editions through Freeway Editions. The Baby tape sculptures come in four different colors and are produced in a run of 10 each and is something every fan of the American street artist recognizes as the medium that is his original claim to fame. Openings: Zaria Forman – “SLIP” @ Winston Wächter Fine Art

Last week, Winston Wachter Fine Art in New York hosted the opening of Zaria Forman’s exhibition entitled SLIP. Infused with climate change awareness, the pastel drawings from the Brooklyn-based artist documents subjects that range from the melting icebergs in Greenland to the rising sea levels that threaten the Maldives. Despite the rainy weather, fans braved the deluge to check out the her new work including her largest piece to date. Upcoming: Casey Weldon – “Hastemaker” @ Roq La Rue

Starting on October 1st, new works collectively entitled Hastemaker will be on display at Roq La Rue from Casey Weldon (featured). For his return to the Seattle showspace (see 2014), the locally-based illustrator and fine artist will be presenting more dreamlike paintings utilizing a hyperchromatic palette, of which the piece above Pixel Perish is a good example. NuArt ’15: Recap

With this year’s NuArt Festival wrapping up last week, we now have some more photos of outdoor works that we may have missed in our earlier coverage. Hitting the streets of Stavenger, the roster of artists left their recognizable marks over the Norwegian city like the piece seen above from Ernest Zacharevic that features stitch work to keep the locals warm in the upcoming winter. From August 13th until September 27th, the Plus 81 Gallery in NYC is hosting a solo exhibition by Meguru Yamaguchi (featured). The show includes the most recent works from his “Cut & Paste” series of robust abstract pieces. Born and raised in Shibuya, Tokyo’s epicenter of youth culture, the Japanese artist is now working and living in Brooklyn, NY. Tomorrow night (September 12th), Jonathan LeVine Gallery (529 West 20th Street) will be hosting the opening of Beasts of Arcadia, a new solo from Joel Rea. The predominant imagery from this new body of work features human figures and tigers, placed in environments that are actively hostile to their existence. Previews: JR – “DECADE, Portrait d’une génération” @ Galerie Perrotin (Paris)

Tomorrow night (September 12th), the newest solo from JR (interviewed) will be opening at the rue de Turenne and impasse Saint-Claude spaces of Galerie Perrotin in Paris. Entitled DECADE, Portrait dune génération, the exhibition will feature a selection of his videos, ink on wood pieces, and recent photographs that has spanned the last 10 years.
