Recap: artMRKT San Francisco 2015

Last week, the fifth edition of Art Market San Francisco welcomed a record 25,000 visitors to Fort Mason Festival Pavilion over the five days it was open to the public. A wide range of works were on display at premier contemporary and modern art fair in the Bay Area including works from Kevin Earl Taylor (seen above) as well as many familiar and new names to our readers. James Jean: Xenograph Preorder & Fundraiser

James Jean (interviewed) recently announced the preorder for his next book entitled Xenograph. Documenting his work from 2010 to 2014, the monograph will pick up where REBUS left off and also features images of his exquisite pen and ink drawings from his  sketchbook. Funds raised for the first printing will go toward the cost of self-publishing for the first time, giving Jean more control over the process. Releases: DALeast – “egariM” Print

Marking the upcoming Main Street exhibition at the Mohammed VI Museum (MMVI) of modern and contemporary art in Rabat, Morocco, Print Them All just announced the release of a limited edition by DALeast (interviewed). As one of the participants of this big expo, the Chinese artist recently spent a couple of days at Idem Studio in Paris, producing his first fine art lithograph. Previews: Evan Hecox – “Far” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

For his third solo with Joshua Liner Gallery, opening on May 7th, Evan Hecox has prepared a series of works on paper, wood panel, and canvas, employing numerous combinations of acrylic paint, ink, gouache, watercolor, and colored pencil. Entitled Far, the new exhibition continues the Denver-based artist’s documentation of his travels, including inspiration from trips to New York, the remote Mojave Desert, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Upcoming: Candice Tripp – “Credulous Morons” @ Baltic 39

In celebration of Newcastle’s Late Shows, Candice Tripp (interviewed) will be holding a one night only show at Baltic 39 on May 12th. Based on an extension of the open studio platform, the locally based artist will be exhibiting the work that she creates between shows that often doesn’t see the light of day. Previews: Katrin Fridriks @ Personal Structures – Crossing Borders (56th International Venice Biennale Arte)

On 9th of May, another edition of the Venice Biennale will be open, staying on view all the way until the 22nd of November. The 56th International Art Exhibition is titled All the World’s Futures, and will feature 90 national participants exhibiting in the historical Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale, and in the city of Venice. Openings: Todd “REAS” James – ‘Fantasy Island’ @ Lazarides Rathbone

The New York-based Todd James a.k.a. REAS, is showing his new works at London’s Lazarides. The exhibition entitled Fantasy Island explores the grotesque of socio-political news we receive, between images of war, somali pirates, UN soldiers and scantily-clad females posing on the cover of fashion magazines. Using vibrant colours, the American artist’s paintings feature an army of multicolored AK47, armed soldiers balancing cup of teas in armchairs, while his oversexualised blonde female portraits are reminiscent of Wesselman. Tomorrow (May 2nd) at the Seattle Art Museum, Rebirth Of The World, a solo show from Chiho Aoshima, will open to a public. The Takashi Murakami protégé from his Kaikai Kiki Collective is known for her fantasy worlds of ghosts, zombies, and teenage girls, oftentimes created with a digital technique.
