Baby Tattooville ’14 / Interviews: Tara McPherson

New York-based artist Tara McPherson spent some time talking with AM while she got ready for this year’s Baby Tattooville. She is best known for her paintings featuring women in mysterious settings, but is also widely regarded for her screen printing and has even been called “The Crown Princess of Rock Posters” by Elle Magazine. She explains how being a mother has changed her daily schedule, how she has moved on from the fire that destroyed her home and how she beats an artistic funk. […]

Studio Visits: Carl Krull – “Seismic” @ V1 Gallery

Ahead of Carl Krull’s current show at V1 Gallery, which opened over the weekend, we paid a visit to his studio to take a look at the new work. Situated at the top of an ancient building in Copenhagen overlooking the harbor, the impressive work space is a perfect setting to get the creative juices going and has indeed housed other artists throughout its history. Seismic is an appropriate title for Krull’s new work as he uses a very distinctive technique to produce his images […]

Previews: Sail – “Canna Intrat” @ Roq La Rue

On October 2nd, Seattle will see a new solo from Sail (featured) opening at Roq La Rue entitled Canna Intrat. The Northwest artist will be revisiting the gallery (see 2013) with new ink drawings on paper featuring darkly atmospheric portraits of his characters surrounded by shadows and vegetation. The strikingly detailed works almost seem like photos, with his mysterious subjects posed to “represent the promise of rebirth after death or catastrophe.” More preview images below… Discuss Sail here.

Baby Tattooville ’14 / Interviews: Bob Dob

AM recently got the chance to catch up with California based pop surrealist & art professor Bob Dob while he was preparing this year’s Baby Tattooville (other interviews here). Bob uses an illustrative, retro style to capture feelings of optimism tapered with cynical images to capture strange moments with a cast of recurring characters (most notably the red devil Luey). Questions and answers below… Arrested Motion (AM): Tell me about your history with Baby Tattooville? What are you most excited about? Bob Dob (BD): I was […]

Earlier this month, the OHWOW Gallery opened a new solo show from Torey Thornton, his debut showing in Los Angeles. Entitled Some Narrow Sleeping, the new exhibition presents mixed media works that play with manipulations of scale and perspective, somewhat of a continuation of the body of work seen in France recently (covered). Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Torey Thornton here.

Openings: D*Face – “Scars & Stripes” (Los Angeles)

Over the weekend, AM headed out to Los Angeles to check out a solo from D*Face (interviewed) at a popup location in West Hollywood (315 S. Robertson Blvd). Greeted by an installation featuring a giant D*Dog sculpture crushing a police cruiser with full on smoke, fans were hyped up to enter the gallery space to take in a new body work from the British street artist. Inside, attendees were treated to portraits of actors, celebrities, and musicians, remixed in D’s signature aesthetic as well as his recognizable Lichtenstein-influenced […]

Baby Tattooville ’14 / Interviews: Brom

Washington State based artist Brom is a legend in the fantasy world, with art work in movies, games and books.  His latest book Krampus, the Yule Lord was released in April of this year and he is coming off of recent appearances at Emerald City Con and Fantasy Con. Showing: Clayton Brothers – “Open to the Public” @ Mark Moore Gallery

The last time we saw a solo show from the Clayton Brothers in Los Angeles (covered), it was 2011. Open to the Public draws its inspiration and eclectic setup from the Sun Thrift Store in Sunland, a famous local “thrifting mecca” and includes not just the brothers’ paintings but […]

Previews: Ai Weiwei – “@Large” on Alcatraz

Starting September 27th thru April of next year, a major exhibition from Ai Weiwei will be on view at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The legendary prison and tourist hotspot is an intriguing location for the Chinese aritst’s creative endeavor as well as his message about human rights and freedom of expression, bringing his work in tension with ideas of confinement and restriction intrinsic to the locale. Seven site specific installations – With Wind (seen above), Trace, Refraction, Stay Tuned, Illumination, Blossom, Yours Truly will be […]

Upcoming: Chet Zar – “All Hallow’s Eve” @ Copro Gallery

Those who are familiar with Chet Zar’s (interviewed) beautifully grotesque imagery would not be surprised if they heard Halloween was one of his favorite holidays. This year, Copro Gallery in Los Angeles will be celebrating in fashion with a vintage costume party on October 18th along with the opening of a new solo show from the locally-based artist entitled All Hallow’s Eve. As you can see from the preview shots, he has been preparing a series of ghastly paintings for the occasion. Discuss Chet Zar here.
