Openings: Bruno Novelli – “Materia Radiante” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last Thursday, AM was on hand for the opening of Materia Radiante featuring new works from Brazilian artist Bruno Novelli at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Inspired by the philosophy of Henri Bergson and the imagery of the Amazon rainforest, Mr. Novelli used punchy colors and contrasting geometric shapes to explore the concept of the diminishing boundaries between objects and their environment. The size and audacity of the art are striking, making the gallery feel as if it is being overtaken by otherworldly vegetation. The show incorporates a […]

Recap: Cai Guo-Qiang – “The Ninth Wave” @ Power Station of Art (Part I)

After a look at the The Ninth Wave, a fishing boat installation from Cai Guo-Qiang’s hometown of Quanzhou carrying 99 fabricated animals, we now turn our attention to the exhibition with the same name at the Power Station of Art. Housed at a renovated power station in Shanghai, the ample space at the museum was a perfect setting for the Chinese artist’s work as well as the creative sessions (also see LA 2012) where pieces of commissioned art were produced utilizing his signature gunpowder technique. […]

Casey Weldon’s Novel Relic opened earlier this month, his first solo show at Roq La Rue. AM caught up with Weldon a few days prior to the open for a studio visit as he finished up a couple paintings. With all of the completed pieces hanging in the gallery, it was nice to see that his hard work paid off and you can’t go wrong with hipster monkeys! Femke Hiemstra continued her mastery of tiny details in Warten am Waldrand (translates to Waiting at The Edge […]

Upcoming: Kevin Cyr @ Alden Gallery

On August 22nd, the Alden Gallery in Provincetown will be presenting some new works from Kevin Cyr (interviewed). The fresh oil on panel paintings will expand on his series of portraits of old trucks, cars, campers, and vans – the more covered with graffiti and neglected the better. The upstate New York-based artist likes nothing better than to travel the urban centers of the world photographing these modes of transport infused with personality and then home to immortalize them as art. Head over for a look […]

For this event that took place from July 20-28, they invited a group of international artists to help raise awareness for the conservation of the ocean.  Similar to what they did with POW! WOW!
