Openings: Erica Rose Levine – “Empress” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last weekend, Thinkspace Gallery hosted the opening for Erica Rose Levine’s show Empress in their project room (the same night as Jacub Gagnon & Brian Mashburn). Using primarily colored pencils, markers, and graphite, the Brooklyn-based artist created portraits of women and their “use of decoration and beauty as power.” The details she is able to achieve is impressive and we suggest you stop by to see the work in person if you are in the area before July 12th. Upcoming: Rosson Crow @ Musée Régional d’Art Contemporain Languedoc-Roussillon

Starting Saturday (June 28th) in France, in the heart of Languedoc-Roussillon in the town of Sérignan, the Regional Museum of Contemporary Art will be opening a show from Rosson Crow (featured). Showing through November 2nd, the exhibition will feature the young painter’s hallucinatory abstractions of decadent interior spaces, oftentimes embellished with elements more often seen in urban settings. This lends a modern twist to her work influenced by old world techniques, which leads to interesting juxtapositions. Discuss Rosson Crow here.

Openings: Jacub Gagnon – “World’s Collide” @ Thinkspace

Last weekend, AM stopped by Thinkspace to check out the almost sold-out solo from Jacub Gagnon (interviewed) entitled World’s Collide. Painted against a black background, the surreal portraits of his chosen creatures really pop and seem even more vivid. Full of whimsy and imaginative touches, you can see the Toronto-based artist thought carefully about each element of the pieces, from title to composition. Take a look at more photos from the opening below. Discuss this show here. Discuss Jacub Gagnon here.

Over the weekend, Thinkspace Gallery opened a new show from Brian Mashburn entitled simply New Works. Specializing in desolate landscapes that feature silhouettes of the ruins of civilization or abandoned construction, the Ashville-based artist further develops the atmosphere with the palette he uses for the background. The misty skies and hues that speak to either the end of an age or the dawn of one is not devoid of hope as Mashburn typically includes an animal or character in the foreground that becomes the focus […]
