Setup: Jeff Koons – “Split-Rocker” @ Rockefeller Center

Later this month, Jeff Koons will be unveiling a retrospective at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art and there are plenty of events to coincide with this key exhibition. One of these will feature his famous outdoor flowered sculpture entitled Split-Rocker at the center of Rockefeller Center. Playing off Koons’ fascination with dichotomy and the in-between, this sculpture melds two notable children rocking toys – the horse and the dinosaur. Its right side is a horse and its left side is a dinosaur. Currently, the enormous sculptural piece […]

Openings: Thomas Campbell – “Ampersand” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last Thursday saw the opening of Thomas Campbell’s first solo exhibition with the Joshua Liner Gallery, entitled Ampersand. The show’s title is apt given Campbell’s wide range of practice:  paintings & drawings & prints & quilts & gourds & bronzes… In addition, all of the works explode with colors & patterns & textures & characters & words. And although displaying such a diverse grouping of mediums and works together could have easily felt fragmented or visually overwhelming, Campbell is able to unite them all by […]

Openings: Futura – “Introspective” @ Magda Danysz (Paris)

Earlier this week, graffiti legend Futura created new work for a Paris show at Magda Danysz Gallery entitled Introspective. Drawing from many of the series of works that have defined his career, the NYC-based artist presented street influenced abstractions, figurative work featuring his pointman character, and paintings that included his famous atom motif. This love for fashion is evident in Carson’s work as well as the use of repeated patterns and motifs that add another layer of complexity to his work. Take a look at more preview images below… Discuss this […]

Openings: Andy Kehoe – “Inner Mystic” @ Roq la Rue

It’s been a few years since Andy Kehoe’s last show at Roq la Rue, but to say he’s been busy would be an understatement. With several shows since then, the Pittsburgh-based painter continues to hone his skills and evolve as an artist. Woodland animals and anthropomorphized creatures are a mainstay in his work, but his use of resin has really raised the level of dimension, quite literally.  Layers of clear resin are poured into a sealed frame, with each layer painted in a unique fashion, making […]
