Openings: Bill McRight – “Willing To Lose” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Last week, Bill McRight (interviewed) opened up a show alongside Alex Lukas (interviewed) and his post-apocalyptal imagery at the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland. Entitled Willing To Lose, the new body of work from McRight consisted of his signature home-made shanks and other weaponry as well as some skull-based engraved mirrors. Streets: Ernest Zacharevic (Malaysia) – Part I

Currently, street muralist Ernest Zacharevic is in Malaysia prepping for his show, Art Is Rubbish Is Art, opening later this week (January 17th) at the Hin Company Bus Depot, a now disused building along Brick Kiln Road, in George Town, Penang. Along with original works, he has of course has been hard at work painting walls inside and around the complex in his whimsical style that often incorporates three dimensional elements. Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines. Showing: Johnson Tang – “Living Clay” @ Yingge Ceramics Museum

Currently on view through January 19th in Taiwan is an exhibition featuring the surreal sculptures of Johnson Tsang. Entitled Living Clay, the exhibition sees the Hong Kong-based ceramic artist present a full repertoire of works at the Yingge Ceramics Museum including his whimsical takes on functional objects with characters in fluid play with the forms. Along with these fun pieces, Tsang also tackles social political issues like war, violence, and the influence of media in our children. Take a look at more photos below… Via Colassal.

Last week, a group show to benefit cancer charities opened up at the Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle entitled Unpredictable Gravity. Raising over 20K so far, the success of the show is due in no small part to the efforts of curator Robbie Lowery and the stellar contributions from the artists. Banksy’s “Heart Balloon” Sells for $650K to Coldplay’s Martin

One of the iconic images from Banksy’s historic artist residency on the streets of New York last year was the so called Heart Balloon (later jacked and displayed during Basel Week Miami). On February 7th, Space 1026 in Philadelphia will be opening a solo show from Erin M Riley (interviewed) entitled Crimson Landslide. These new pieces from the young artist, who recently relocated to Brooklyn from Philly, will depict everyday objects and the detritus of female identity like toiletries, birth control pills, and more.
