Upcoming: “Summer Reading” @ The Hole

Opening tonight at The Hole in New York is a new group show entitled Summer Reading. For this exhibition, the showspace was converted into a giant art book reading room where attendees will be invited to take a seat and peruse whatever may interest them. Of course, there will be art as well from a diverse list of artists on the theme at hand including Airan Kang, Alexander Rodriguez, Andre Saraiva, Andrew Kuo, Brad Phillips, Brian Belott, Brian Dettmer, Clare Rojas, David Shrigley, Devin Troy Strother, […]

Previews: Naoto Hattori – “REM” @ Copro Gallery

It’s been a little over a year since Naoto Hattori last showed in Los Angeles (covered), so it is about time for another go. REM will open on July 27th at the Copro Gallery in Santa Monica, with the title seemingly referring to that stage of sleep where dreams occur. This is certainly as good a title as any to describe the Japanese painter’s imagery, with surreal and psychedelic creatures, all rendered in super detail. If you have seen his work in person, you will have marveled at […]

Update: Kelsey Brookes

It turns out a piece from the amazing sold out show (covered) from Kelsey Brookes at Quint Contemporary last year went to the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (seen above in their recent acquisitions show). If you remember, the piece entitled Mescaline was part of his series of paintings inspired by the structures of psychedelics, no doubt drawing from personal experience as well as from his viewpoint as a former biochemist. It sounds like he’s reached the end of the “party drug” works (some seen in progress below), […]

Openings: Momo in Grottaglie, Italy

Last weekeend in Grottaglie, Italy in the ceramic district, the geometrically inclined Momo opened up a solo show. Put on by the people behind the annual Fame Festival, the exhibition featured pieces that were very similar to the abstract murals that the street muralist has been known for. His use of color and the balanced composition bely a fine hand behind each work. Take a look at more photos below and reach out if you are interested in adding something to your collection here… Discuss Momo here. Photo credit: Matteo […]

Releases: Audrey Kawasaki x Pressure Printing – “Eien”

For those who missed Audrey Kawasaki’s (interviewed) sold out print release from Pressure Printing five years ago, here is your chance at the companion print. Entitled Eien, which in Japanese translates to “forever,” “eternity,” or “permanence,” the new limited edition (run of 50) sized at  8 ¾” × 12 ¾” will cost you $1500 and comes in hand built walnut frames. The print, which is hand embellished by Audrey in pink pencil, will be available for sale at noon PDT on Tuesday, July 23rd 2013. Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Chet Zar – “Ego Death” Kickstarter

It sounds like  Chet Zar (interviewed) has big plans for his next show which will be entitled Ego Death. By setting up a kickstarter, the Los Angeles-based painter of monsters hopes to put on an exhibition like an elaborate funeral. Turns out the grotesque creatures he is famous for creating are his representations of our egos, parts of us we don’t like to look at and it’s time to end things once and for all. Learn more in the video below, and if you are feeling generous, […]

Openings: Sylvia Ji – “Interwoven” @ FFDG

San Francisco native and now Los Angeles-based painter, Sylvia Ji, opened her solo show Interwoven at Fecal Face Dot Gallery last Friday evening. The show featured new paintings on wood that feature traditional patterns interwoven with The Day of the Dead motifs as well as expanding on her work with the female form incorporating similar elements. Also released at the opening was a new print featuring one of her works in the show. Check out pics from the opening below… Discuss Sylvia Ji here.

Openings: Pose & Revok – “Uphill Both Ways” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

MSK members Pose and Revok (pictured above with gallerist Levine) recently visited New York City and immediately made their mark by being the current artists to work on the highly visible Bowery & Houston Mural (here & here). They also came into town to premiere respective new bodies of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The tandem exhibition (curated by Roger Gastman) was a breath of fresh air from the graffiti-based fine artists. Entitled Uphill Both Ways, the show’s name was inspired by the late graffiti artist & […]

Preview: MOMO show in Grottaglie, Italy

Tonight in Grottaglie, Italy, Momo will be putting on a new solo exhibition with the people behind the annual Fame Festival. After tooling around the Cuba & Jamaica, painting in the streets with his geometrically-inclined imagery, he will be returning to Southern Italy with some new pieces inspired by his travels. The festivities start at 7 pm at Bottega Papocchia in the Quartiere Delle Ceramiche. Discuss Momo here.

Showing: Eine – “Innocence” @ CHG Circa

This week will be the final days left for fans in Los Angeles of Eine to check out his solo show at CHG Circa. Entitled Innocence, the body of work assembled from the London-based letter specialist features the alphabet that has made him famous mixed in with some imagery that looks to be dealing with ideas of censorship and the ever growing prevalence of CCTV monitoring. Take a look at more photos below… Photo credit: Sam Graham (Installation), Ian Cox (Portrait). Discuss Eine here.
