Showing: Ryan De La Hoz – ‘What New Mystery Is This?’ @ RVCA SF

Ryan De La Hoz has been grabbing our eye over the last couple of years and appreciation of his artwork has been building momentum rapidly recently. His current solo exhibition What New Mystery Is This? is showing at RVCA in San Francisco, and is accompanied by new window displays in the SF space by other artists we admire – Bill McRight and Ben Venom. Ryan’s work utilizes cut paper and found imagery with exquisitely detailed ink linework to create a wonderful blend of Op-Art fused with geometric assemblages. Upcoming: Fuco Ueda @ Lower Akihabara

We haven’t seen a showing of Fuco Ueda’s work stateside for a while, but those in Japan have a chance to take in a new body of work when her show opens at Lower Akihabara. Her surreal and sometimes disturbing works have long enchanted us at AM, so those who will be in Tokyo on June 15th would be advised to make plans to see her paintings for yourself. The show looks to be explore the use of Chrysanthemum, a commonly reoccurring flower in her imagery. […]

Openings: José Parlá & JR – “Wrinkles of the City, Havana” @ Bryce Wolkowitz

Last week, the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery in New York hosted the opening of JR and José Parlá’s collaborative showing entitled The Wrinkles of the City, Havana. The joint works were based on the time they spent in Cuba a year ago painting street murals together (covered) as part of JR’s continuing project Wrinkles of the City where he photographs senior citizens and pastes their portraits on the walls of city buildings. An example of this was outside the showspace in the form of a mural which the two created several weeks ago (covered). Take a look at all the […]

Publications: VNA Issue 22

Our friends at team VNA are at it again! Now onto issue 22 and hot off the presses featuring Vhils (filmed) on the cover, along with some favourites of ours between the sheets such as AJ Fosik, Blaine Fontana, Cranio, Husk Mit Navn and Moneyless as VNA continues to spread it’s wings further afield than the graffiti and street art base it started out with. Also, it looks like the VNA crew are moving HQ in the near future as well, so peep their store for some […]

Preview: Brendan Monroe – “Melting Into the Floor” @ Richard Heller Gallery

Oakland based artist, Brendan Monroe (interviewed), is opening an exhibition at Richard Heller Gallery in Santa Monica on May 18. After having solos in Switzerland, France, and Canada, this will be Monroe’s first show in the LA area in a long time (see 2009). This time around, he prepared number of acrylic paintings on paper, as well as some exceptionally well crafted sculptures in wood, mostly using very abstract, figurative images and elements. His work always had recognizable abstract segments that play with the idea of texture and state of matter, but pieces for […]

Upcoming: “Zombie” @ Last Rites Gallery

Coming up on Memorial Day weekend (May 25th), the Last Rites Gallery in New York will be hosting a show dedicated to artists and their love for zombies. The group show curated by Travis Louie will feature work inspired by the undead and include artists like Mia Araujo, Matt Dangler, Fred Harper, Sarah Joncas, Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Allison Sommers, Chet Zar, and more (see full list below). And, if the piece above by John Cebollero inspired by Munch’s The Scream is any indication, there […]

Preview: Alex Lukas & Richard Colman @ Guerrero Gallery

After a look into Alex Lukas’ studio as he prepared for his solo showing at Guerrero Gallery opening this Saturday night (May 11th) in San Francisco, it’s time to bring you some preview images from the Philly-based artist. Employing a series of printmaking techniques along traditional artistic processes, Lukas is able to create a new gritty look at American landscapes filled with graffiti, decay, and sometimes submerged after our worst fears of global warming come true. His works will be shown with Richard Colman’s in […]

Videos: ROA x Stop Over

If you remember from earlier this year, Belgium-based artist ROA put on a homecoming show in Brussels at Bodson-Emelinckx Gallery entitled Stop Over. Although we covered the exhibition extensively, photos sometimes don’t do justice to the interactive nature of his works. This latest video that Colin M. Day put together follows the street muralist as he hunted in the city for found materials and also includes footage of the opening as patrons and collectors played with the panels and moveable parts to ROA’s pieces. As a bonus, also check […]

Openings: Mike Shine – “Flotsam’s Harvest” @ White Walls

A couple months ago, White Walls in San Francisco played host to Flotsam’s Harvest by the Bolinas-based Mike Shine (featured). The exhibition consisted of an immersive installation featuring paintings, films, and performance art filled with symbolism and clues as to solve the dark “World Riddle” posed by Friedrich Nietzsche in his book, Thus Spake Zarathustra. If you recall, the German philosopher and poet also provided inspiration for Shine’s show in Los Angeles back in 2011 (covered). Check out the rest of the photos below… Photo credit: Joe Russo.
