Streets: El Mac x Shamsia Hassan (Vietnam)

Last weekend, the 7th Asia Pacific Triennial was held in Australia and with it, a new mural from El Mac was unveiled. Originally painted in Vietnam, the piece entitled Birds of No Nation was a collaboration with Shamsia Hassan, probably the only serious female graffiti writer in Afghanistan and also an associate professor in the Fine Arts Department at Kabul University. The central figure is based on her portrait with the surrounding designs and poetry by Hassani. It reads: پرنده های بی وطن ،همه اسیرن […]

Preview: Dave Kinsey – “Everything at Once” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

This Thursday, December 13th, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea will be hosting new paintings from Dave Kinsey collectively entitled Everything at Once. His largest body of work to be produced since his 2010 solo there features abstract renderings of his usual characters and subjects, which this time is based on the “dissemination of information received via the internet and TV and how that shapes our thoughts and views on domestic and world views.” Rounding out the show are a series works on paper influenced by old master […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Marian Goodman @ Art Basel

Flanked on two walls by monumental works by Gerhard Richter and Julie Mehretu, Marian Goodman Gallery’s booth at Art Basel Miami Beach provided spectacular viewing for all that visited its booth. Art market man of the year Gerhard Richter’s striped piece was from his series using a digital process and provided a taste for those that missed his most recent show with Goodman. Three photographs by Rineke Dijkstra covered one wall and a wall text by Lawrence Weiner were just some of the important artists’ works that were seemingly everywhere you looked at […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Basel Highlights – Part 2

Without a doubt the sun of the art fair solar system that is Basel Week Miami is Art Basel. Concentrating on just this fair and dedicating our energy to catching it in its entirety including the two hundred plus blue chip galleries present took AM two full days (see day one). It was definitely worth the time spent as we observed million of dollars and flowing from collectors into the art world. What was interesting is the more notable influence of a younger generation artists […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: NADA Fair Highlights

With this year’s presentation of the NADA art fair, The New Art Dealers Alliance celebrates ten years presenting the best in new, young, exciting, and emerging art and artists. If the main Art Basel fair has a reputation for having the most well-known and blue chip works, this fair is known for having names and galleries that will soon take the next step to Basel (although there are some galleries that are perfectly content staying at NADA, which speak volumes regarding the quality and support […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: The Miami Project – Highlights

AM found time to visit another fair in Midtown Miami, the inaugural Miami Project earlier this week. Unlike most new fairs, we were impressed by their solid lineup of respected galleries and great facilities. This is perhaps this is due to the experience of the fair’s organizers, artMRKT Productions, who have already held fairs Houston, San Francisco, and the Hamptons. Check out the selection of works below and the a piece from Mel Bochner above… Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

British artist Jonathan Darby recently transformed San Francisco’s White Walls gallery to give the feel of the war torn city of Goma, which is located in the Congo with the population of around a million people. Darby is currently the creative director of AptART and has previously worked with orphans, street kids and former children soldiers in the area, doing paintings and setting up workshops. During […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Basel Highlights – Part 1

The first art fair AM rolled into at this year’s fairs in Miami was the main Art Basel event. During the early buyer’s preview, we caught many collectors rushing Black Friday style into to their favorite galleries for a chance to buy works from their favorite artists. This was not only the perfect time to beat the crowds see the standout works, but also for celebrity watching as they made their rounds looking for their blue chip artwork. Check out a look at the opening day action […]
