Previews: Ryan Heshka – “Disasterama” @ Roq La Rue

Later tonight, Ryan Heshka will be unveiling a new body of work (alongside Femke Hiemstra) at the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle entitled Disasterama. The showing will feature the Vancouver-based painter’s Golden Era sci fi pulp-inspired pieces that feature the tension between man & nature (and otherworldly creatures) and often touches on technology & science in the imagery. Basel Week Miami ’12: Art Asia – Highlights

An art fair we always check out while we are in town for Basel Week Miami is the sister fair of SCOPE – Art Asia. While there perusing gems from the Far East, we are sure to come upon new names to follow as well as catch up with more familiar artists. Basel Week Miami ’12: “It Ain’t Fair” / OHWOW

Earlier tonight, the OHWOW Gallery presented the fifth and final edition to their annual It Ain’t Fair group show during Basel Week Miami. Basel Week Miami ’12: SCOPE – Highlights

This morning, we stopped by to check out one of the other satellite fairs in Miami – SCOPE. The large complex featured many of the galleries and artists that we are familiar with as well as some new discoveries. Basel Week Miami ’12: CONTEXT Art Miami – Highlights

Despite with the brazen display of jacked Banksy’s at the new CONTEXT Art Miami, there was a pretty good selection of work displayed. As with most fairs, there were artists that we recognized which have been featured on the pages of AM before and also new artists to be discovered that we were excited about. Basel Week Miami ’12: “Banksy Out of CONTEXT” @ CONTEXT Art Miami

Sure to rile up true street art fans everywhere, the CONTEXT Art Miami fair has gone ahead and approved the display of works purported to be pieces from Banksy (no Pest Control authentication obviously) taken from around the world (Israel, England, Los Angeles and San Francisco). Arranged by gallerist Stephan Keszler of Southampton, the works are placed strategically throughout the complex of tents, perhaps used by the fair to garner attention as it is a new offshoot of Art Miami. With the press preview this morning opening up the main fair at Basel Week Miami, the crew at AM headed to South Beach to check out all the blue-chip galleries and their offerings for 2012. Preview: Femke Hiemstra – “Let The Devil Wear Black” @ Roq La Rue

On Friday night, the Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle will be presenting all new works from Femke Hiemstra (showing alongside Ryan Heshka). Let The Devil Wear Back will feature the Dutch artist’s mixed media paintings as well as black & white drawings that chronicle the stories of mysterious animals (like cats!) as well as come-to-life inanimate objects. These dark fairytale scenes are often rendered on found objects like books and boxes, further enhances each piece’s whimsy and “magical powers.” Discuss this show here.

Basel Week Miami ’12 / Openings: “Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates” @ Wynwood Walls

Earlier this evening, AM stopped by Wynwood Walls to check out the opening of the Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates group exhibition inside the new Nicewalk Gallery space. The show featured backlit lenticular paintings (or photos) alongside some original works from selected artists (Aiko, Ron English, Swoon, How & Nosm, Logan Hicks, Kenny Scharf, Futura) who have painted murals at the complex. Previews: Lucas Price – ‘T.E.A.M. Atlas’ @ Rove Gallery

Expect more pleasant surprises from Lucas Price as his latest body of work is about to be revealed in solo show T.E.A.M. Atlas (an acronym for The Earth As My Atlas). Lucas continues his exploration of cataloguing ephemera within his work, but this time it appears that the work is all rendered or drawn rather than collaged. Rove Gallery in Hoxton Square play host to this latest collection of works comprised of new oil paintings and carbon / graphite drawings.
