Openings: JonOne – “A Beautiful Madness” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Earlier this month, the Fabien Castanier Gallery presented the first solo exhibition in the United States from JonOne entitled A Beautiful Madness. Although raised in New York where he laid his graffiti roots in Harlem, JonOne has lived in Paris since the mid 1980s where he has established himself as a fine artist. His imagery, as seen in this new work, is characterized by an abstract and energetic form of expression leading to compositions full of freestyle strokes, movement, and color. The exhibition runs through December 2nd, so […]

Preview: Nicoletta Ceccoli – “Eye Candy” @ AFA NYC

San Marino-based painter Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) will be presenting all new works tomorrow night (November 17th) at AFA NYC. Entitled Eye Candy, the collection of paintings on display will focus on the interplay between bitterness and sweetness. Desserts, whether cakes or candy, are generally regarded as positive, happy things, but although depicted by Ceccoli’s delicate hand and rendered in pastels, there are also ways they can cause conflict in us as we fight our appetite and all the ills that come from over indulgence. This more […]

Streets: How & Nosm on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Right after super storm Sandy rolled through NYC, we brought you an inside look at the famous Bowery & Houston wall as twins How & Nosm worked industriously to make their mark on this landmark mural location. Now, we can bring you some photos of the completed piece which utilized their signature red & gray-scale color palettes. From the looks of things, the brothers got into a real nice groove layering detail upon detail into mural, which in the end seemed to flow together seamlessly. Along with […]

Preview: Melodie Provenzano – “Rock Center” @ Lyons Wier Gallery

Currently on view at the Lyons Wier Gallery (with the opening earlier tonight), Rock Center is an all new show from the New York-based Melodie Provenzano. Inspired by objects such as figurines, glassware, bows, and plastic toy animals, Provenzano arranges them into whimsical “mock dramas” until the composition elicits the right emotional tone. She states “My paintings are like a catalog of dreams. The composition makes sense to me visually and emotionally without a clearly defined concept to be illustrated. Their meaning is often not […]

Last week, London saw the first solo there ever from Japanese artist Hiro Kurata at the Ivory & Black in Soho. Entitled This Land Was Your Land, the showing featured his version of the East meets West aesthetic in the form of portraiture that took baseball players as the symbols of his explorations of ideas on wealth, power, race, and culture. Openings: Kevin Peterson – “Amended” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last week at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City, Kevin Peterson filled the main space (also see Jacub Gagnon’s work in the project room) with his new show entitled Amended. The paintings he chose to put on display featured his signature form of portraiture with children and animals juxtaposed with backgrounds full of graffiti and urban scenery (some of which had a retro feel to them). Rounding out the show was a sculptural piece based on a defaced playground spring toy that was mirrored with an accompanying painting. […]

Streets: Le 4eme MUR 2012 – Recap

After reporting on Escif’s murals for Le 4eme MUR last year (here & here), we now have a recap of the 2012 edition. The festival’s name (translated to “the fourth wall”) is a theater expression that symbolizes a virtual wall between the actor and the public which can apparently also be applied to the work of the street artist and his audience. This year’s lineup includes a return of Escif along with Mr Jago, Vhils (above), Tellas, Ericailcane, and 108. Check out more photos below…
