Tomorrow night (September 8th) in San Francisco, Varnish Fine Art will be hosting For Smoke & Mirrors, the debut exhibition by Ransom & Mitchell. Tonight (September 7th) in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Flanders Gallery will be hosting Spectrum Analysis, a showing of new installations from James “Dalek” Marshall (interviewed). Continuing his exploration of abstract geometries, last seen in Orange County in July, Marshall will be filling the showspace with large-scale blue paintings executed on modular panels. Created last year during a residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, these diamond and starburst forms will interspaced with murals painted directly onto the gallery walls. Take a look at some shots of the work […]

Openings: Evah Fan – “What Have You” @ Park Life

Last Friday evening, Park Life in San Francisco presented Evah Fan’s latest colorful, mysterious and minimalistic artworks (previewed). For this show, she veered slightly away from her usually microscopic gouache paintings and incorporated blocks of colors and figures to depict what might happen in everyday indoor scenarios from the point of view of a person peering through a window. Also included in the exhibition is a series of mini sculptures that contrast with the paintings and appear to poke out towards the viewer from the […]

Travis Louie for “Le Carnaval des Spectres” @ Artoyz

Take a look at these custom “Ghostly Stan” Skelve figures from Travis Louie (interviewed) that he painted for the upcoming Le Carnaval des Spectres group show at Artoyz in Paris opening on September 13th. Centered on the theme of ghosts and spirits, the exhibition will also showcase all new works from Brandt Peters, Kathie Olivas, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd and Teodoru Badiu bust we dare say the level of detail put forth by Travis in these customs will be one of the highlights. Along with hand-painted figures, some new toys may make their debut as well – more […]

Preview / Setup: Futura – “Future-Shock” @ Valmorbida (NYC)

As promised, AM visited Futura for a behind the scene’s look at upcoming his monster show in New York City. Presented in the same pop-up location in the meat-packing district at which Andy Valmorbida previously exhibited Retna, this massive body of work entitled Future-Shock is a proper homecoming for the New York graffiti legend. Something seemed a little different from our previous interactions with Mr. McGurr though. Perhaps this body of work may have driven him into another gear. Deliberation and focus were the words that […]

Studio Visit: Luke Chueh

This Friday night, art toy boutique and gallery Rotofugi will be hosting the unveiling of new works from Luke Chueh (interviewed) in a show entitled I Am Your Plaything. AM stopped by the LA-based artist’s studio (dubbed the Shedio 2.0) to check out the paintings headed out to Chicago for the opening. The work he showed us centered around his clever and often times self-deprecating humor all with plenty of inside jokes to go around for toy collectors out there – from the frustrations and joys of blind boxing to digs […]
