Showing: Lucy Sparrow – “Sparrow Mart” @ The Standard, DTLA

The Standard hotel in Downtown LA is currently hosting a big-scale West Coast debut of British artist Lucy Sparrow. As her fifth fully-felted art installation, Sparrow Mart opened doors on August 1st and will stay open for business until the end of the month. We say “open for business” because of the fact that this art installation is a fully functional supermarket, offering a wide range of everyday supplies entirely made from felt and fabric. From bubblegum, fruit and veggies, to different packaging of favorite snacks, […]

Showing: Yayoi Kusama – “With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011)” @ Marciano Art Foundation

For Angeleno’s who missed Yayoi Kusuma’s turn at The Broad (covered) last year, here is your second chance. With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011) features the Japanese artist’s penchant for polka dots in an immersive installation with large fiberglass-reinforced plastic tulips surrounded by floor-to-ceiling red dots. Ranging from over 7 to almost 10 feet tall, the three oversized flowers reinforces the illusion that the viewer has shrunk down to miniature size, an effect amplified by the repeating dots. Recap: Joakim Ojanen – “Year of the Dog” @ Richard Heller Gallery

An exhibition entitled Year of the Dog recently closed at the Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles, their second solo from Joakim Ojanen. Featuring a comprehensive selection of the Stockholm-based artist’s ceramics, bronzes, charcoal drawings, and oil paintings, the show focuses in on Ojanen’s cast of characters that seem to be taken from a children’s book or Adult Swim cartoon. The paintings are somewhat abstract and the sculptures are loose, expertly done with a child-like innocence yet unsettling at the same time. Photo credit: Artsy, Richard McKinnon, and Ethan […]

Showing: Amabouz Taturo – “A Doll’s House” @ Palais de Tokyo

Recently, those walking by entrance to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris have had their attention drawn to a life size dollhouse installation by Amabouz Taturo (a pseudonym for Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi). The piece is part of the ongoing Childhood: Another banana day for the dream-fish exhibition (title take from a story by J.D. Salinger), that sees a good twenty international artists give their take the theme of the show. Three-level doll’s house constructed from iron and wood can be walked through by guests and features […]

As one of the participants chosen to explore “the place robots have in a contemporary social landscape,” Soto certainly has something to add to the conversation seeing these mechanical creatures have […]

On August 4th, Spoke Art’s location in NYC will be hosting The Moleskine Project VII, the seventh iteration of the group show curated by artist Rodrigo Luff and gallery owner Ken Harman. Participating artists include: Rebecca Mason Adams, Sergio Barrale, Stephen Bauman, Kelsey Beckett, Daniel Bilodeau, Stephanie Brown, Juan Francisco Casas, Sam […]
