We were first introduced to the work of Italian-born, Los Angeles-based artist Nicola Verlato’s imagery back in April at a showing (covered) with Jonathan LeVine in New York. Since then, the painter has been compiling a series of work for his latest solo, Zero Gravity, that opens at Merry Karnowsky this Saturday, August 11th. San Francisco’s Spoke Art Gallery recently teamed with East Bay Express, fiftyseven-thirtythree and the city of Oakland to set up an exhibition that opened in conjunction with the 12th Annual Art and Soul Festival. Publications: Andrew Hem – “Dreams Towards Reality” Book

Andrew Hem (interviewed), who we last saw a year ago during his solo in Los Angeles (covered), has something new for his fans. The new book, Dreams Towards Reality, is a survey of Hem’s recent paintings but also includes “selections from his early work, graffiti, sketches, murals, sculptures and collages, as well as photographs from the extensive travel in Southeast Asia and South America that has informed his vision.” Also included is an in-depth essay by Amanda Erlanson. Signings: Futura x Hennessy @ Mel & Rose

Prior to the massive launch party for the new Futura designed Hennessy bottle in Los Angeles, the graffiti legend held a special signing for his fans. Hosted by fine liquor retailers Mel & Rose, the event featured a meet and greet for collectors as well as associated Futura imagery. The folks at 1xRUN just released a new print from Nathan Spoor entitled Rites of Passage in a time-released run of 40 for the next 7 days. After bringing you the works of Claudio Ethos, Vhils, and Conor Harrington from Komafest, all the way from Vardø, Norway, we now have a recap of some the other walls that we have not featured yet. Openings: Eric Fortune – “A Life to Leave” @ Lebasse Projects (Culver City)

Last month at Lebasse Projects, AM had the chance to visit A Life to Leave, a new solo from Eric Fortune (interviewed). Ever since we first started covering the Ohio-based painter’s work, we have known about his time-consuming and very detailed style but the new pieces really seem like he has accentuated his process (if that is possible). Upcoming: RETNA @ Michael Kohn Gallery

Coming up in September, the Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles will be unveiling new paintings and works on paper as well as site-specific installations from RETNA (featured). We last saw the MSK-affiliated writer back in March when he painted a mural at the famed Bowery and Houston location in New York and look forward to the continued evolution of his street hieroglyphics and urban calligraphy.
