Along with AIKO (seen above), others who have painted the walls include Deedee Cheriel, Anthony Lister, Juan Mendez, Eric Garcia, Skypage, Sage Vaughn, Luis Farfan, Curtis Kulig, and Skullphone. If you remember, the DTLA location of the hip chain has also hosted outdoor murals from artists like Mike Stilkey, Buff Monster, Dave Kinsey, […]

Update: Collection Selim Varol @ me Collectors Room Berlin

Earlier this month, we brought you a preview of uber-collector Selim Varol’s show at me Collectors Room Berlin where a portion of his treasured toys and artwork acquired through the years would be on display. The exhibition opened just this past weekend, and for those in the US celebrating Memorial Day, we thought a glimpse of his USA-themed wall would a good starter image for an update on the setup. Make sure you stop by to see for yourself if you are in the area as […]

Openings: Evan Hecox – “Dark Island” @ Joshua Liner

On Thursday, Evan Hecox made his return to Joshua Liner Gallery for his second solo exhibition. Entitled Dark Island, Hecox focuses his new body of work on New York and its renowned five boroughs. With a diverse range of mediums being explored for this show – from works on vintage New York Times from the 1800s to his detailed canvased works – the Denver-based artist made it a point to exercise his detailed style and incorporate site specific inspirations from the Big Apple. We especially noted […]

Video: Kid Acne / The Duke Spirit – “Glorious”

One of our favourite UK exhibitions from 2011 was Kid Acne’s Kill Your Darlings retrospective at Sheffield Museum’s Millennium Gallery, where the artist first presented his Stabby Women film. The film had us hooked, and the B&W imagery captivated audiences in the gallery as his stabby women were brought to life with equal measures of heroism and vengeance. UK band The Duke Spirit liked the film so much that they asked Acne if they could use the footage for their new single Glorious. The resultant […]

Openings: Gary Taxali – ‘My Feelings Like You’ @ Outsiders

The AM UK calendar for attending art openings has been pretty jammed of late, but one that we were sorry to have missed was Gary Taxali’s show My Feelings Like You at the Outsiders gallery in London earlier this month. We’ve been fans of Taxali’s unique take on mark-making for around a decade, and surprisingly this is his first solo showing in the UK. Gary recently sent us these pictures from his visit to the UK for the opening night, and it seems that UK fans […]

Teaser: Paul Wackers – “Wait and Watch Awhile Go By” @ Alice Gallery

Opening next week (May 31st) at Alice Gallery will be Paul Wackers’ new solo Wait and Watch Awhile Go By. Looking to build on his successful showing last year at Morgan Lehman (covered), the New York-based artist will be presenting his special form of still-life painting to his fans in Brussels. The works are figurative and abstract at the same time with geometric and organic elements all centered around objects that we see in our everyday lives. Also featured as the guest artist will be Maya Hayuk. […]

Showing: Ron Mueck @ Hauser & Wirth, London (Savile Row, South Gallery)

If you remember, we previewed the Ron Mueck exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, London (Saville Row, South Gallery) last month. Those familiar with Mueck’s hyperrealist style and playful distortions of scale will know his work needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The four-sculpture show closes on Saturday 26 May, so the terribly busy, the forgetful and the procrastinators still have a couple of days to check it out. Favourite pieces for AM are Still Life, a giant plucked chicken hanging by […]
