Streets: Flying Fortress (Frankfurt)

At the end of last month, Montana Cans in Germany hosted a two day event, Just Writing My Name, where graf artists were invited to paint the Friedensbrücke bridge in Frankfurt. Munich-based legend Flying Fortress, who we met at this year’s POW WOW, participated with this long mural featuring “The Hit Collection.” Check out the full wall as well take a look at a video documenting the going-ons after the jump…

Openings: Meggs – “Journey is the Reward” @ Above Second

Last Friday in Hong Kong, Meggs made the 4500 mile journey from Australia again for another solo exhibition (see 2010) at the Above Second Gallery. With paintings, sculptures, and wall murals infused with his urban aesthetic and comic-inspired imagery filling the showpace, fans who attended the opening for Journey is the Reward were certainly not disappointed. Throw in some work on the streets of the city-state and it was definitely another productive trip. More photos after the jump…

Teaser: Alex Prager – “Compulsion” (LA, NY, London)

Streets: G40 – Aryz, ROA, Jaz, Pixel Pancho, Gaia (Part 1)

It looks like the G40 Art Summit in Richmond, Virginia that we mentioned earlier has kicked off with murals going up at multiple locations around town. Starting things off were Aryz with a massive still-life, ROA with a bird and arrow, Jaz with six lions, Pixel Pancho with two walls in his signature robotic style, and Gaia with his hands and dove. Openings: Kehinde Wiley / The World Stage: Israel @ The Jewish Museum (NYC)

Last month, Kehinde Wiley’s exhibition at The Jewish Museum of New York opened its doors to the public with a selection of large-scale paintings, including one in the museum’s permanent collection. The showing paired with some synergism the works from the Israel portion of the painter’s continuing The World Stage series (seen last year at Roberts & Tilton) with some of the traditional Jewish papercuts and textiles from institution’s collection. Openings: Niels Shoe Meulman – “Justified Scriptures” @ 941 Geary

Last Saturday evening, Amsterdam-based artist Niels Shoe Meulman’s (NSM) exhibition Justified Scriptures opened at 941 Geary. The works in the show meshes his “calligraffiti” with repetition and abstract elements, to create what he describes as “Abstract Expressionism with a calligraphic origin.” This exhibition reflects the road he has traveled as an artist – starting out with being a graffiti legend 80’s, to later becoming a designer/typographer who eventually starts a design company and then gets into advertising. Armory Week ’12: Scope Art Fair

One of the mainstay satellite fairs during Armory Week is the Scope Art Fair. This year’s edition rocked a new location just blocks from the main Armory Art Show (here & here) and gained some fresh galleries go along with its revamped look. Preview: “Hookers” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Tomorrow night, March 31st, in Culver City, Natalia Fabia (interviewed) will be curating a show at the Corey Helford Gallery entitled Hookers. Drawing from her longstanding fascination with the world’s oldest profession, artists like Kent Williams, Michael Hussar, Phil Hale, Erik Sandberg, Saber, REVOK, and more have been instructed to produced similarly inspired work for the exhibition.
