Showing: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Next stop on our tour of Damien Hirst’s The Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 after leaving his Paris showing takes us to the Gagosian in Hong Kong. The most prominent member of the group known as the Young British Artists certainly has outdone himself with this current slate of exhibitions (at least in terms of scope and ambition). This lone display in Asia of his famous dotted motif is no different than the other eleven simultaneous shows planned – filled with paintings, spots, and canvases of different […]

Openings: “Vivian Maier: A Life Discovered” @ Merry Karnowsky

Over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky gallery unveiled to the public their latest exhibition, one which featured the incredible photography of the late Vivian Maier.  Titled Vivian Maier – A Life Discovered: Photographs from the Maloof Collection, the exhibit featured a variety of photographs ranging from the 50’s to the 70’s and although this collection is barely the tip of the surface in terms of quantity of her work, the quality is simply incredible. The very special night was hosted by actor Tim Roth and […]

Videos: Art Stage Singapore 2012

Showing through the end of the weekend, Art Stage Singapore, which is taking place at the spectacular Marina Bay Sands Convention and Exhibition Centre, seeks to distinguish itself from other fairs in the region by maintaining a strong focus on Asian artists. Among the exhibitors are major galleries from Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Seoul, Beijing, Jakarta, Tokyo, Sydney, Taipei, Mumbai, as well as well-known dealers from Europe and the US. Although we did not catch glimpses of work from Adam Neate and Scott Campbell […]

Signings: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Nucleus Gallery

Continuing his whirlwind books signing tour, James Jean (featured) will be at the Nucleus Gallery this Saturday, January 14th (6-9pm) in Southern California. Spots he has already hit up that we had the chance to attend include Reed Space in NYC and the LACMA, where we walked away impressed with the beautiful reproduction of his paintings from the Rebus show at Martha Otero’s in the 240 page publication. See you tomorrow night. Discuss James Jean here.

The long awaited first book from provocative oil painter Michael Hussar entitled White: A Decade is finally ready for release. Openings: Futura 2000 – “Expansions” @ Galerie Jerome de Noirmont (Paris)

Last night, AM was invited for a early viewing of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris. The exhibition entitled Expansions was a fresh collection of works created by the New York graffiti legend. Getting to see the paintings up close gave us a deeper appreciation of the details layered in by the Brooklyn-based artist. This strong new series of works on canvas contained a next level of abstraction & colors mixed with his minimalist spray paint techniques which reflected a evolution of over three […]

Preview: “It Is As It Was” @ Good Press Gallery (Glasgow)

Good Press Gallery has been in existence for just a few short months now, and AM got to check out their inaugural group exhibition The Family Show back in October whilst visiting Glasgow. With a keen curatorial eye and a healthy DIY spirit, Good Press’ upcoming group exhibition It Is As It Was features five young artists whose work we enjoy. Matthew Feyld, R.M. Phoenix, Ryan Stewart Nault, Morgan Blair and Amy Hancock-Martin make up this international showcase, opening 12th January. In particular, we’re pretty taken with […]

Previews / Setup: Skewville – “Playground Tactics” @ Shooting Gallery

Brooklyn-based street duo, Skewville (featured), are making the trip to Cali for a solo showing and will be of course bringing along their signature kicks. The last time we caught up with the twins, Ad Deville and Droo, they were preparing in-studio for their show Anti-Social Networking at the Black Book Gallery in Denver. This time around (Saturday, January 14th), they will be traveling to San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery, where they will present a body of work (Playground Tactics) themed around the old school city playground, […]

AM will be visiting and covering as many of the Gagosian openings for you as possible now that January 12th is here, but hopefully someone out there will be able to attend all eleven locations (New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Rome, Athens, Geneva, and Hong Kong) at some point. “Included in the exhibition are more than 300 paintings, from the first spot on board that Hirst created in 1986; to the smallest spot painting comprising half […]
