With Art Platform in town, the PULSE art fair also decided to hold their Los Angeles event the same weekend. Featuring a mix established and emerging galleries, attendees are giving a nice variety of young and veteran artists.  Also associated with the fair is Pulse Projects, which included installations from participants such as Mike Stilkey, Jen Stark, and Kevin Cyr along with murals from Greg Lamarche and Dave Kinsey (covered). More photos after the jump from Carlos Gonzalez…

Nuart Festival ’11: David Choe & DVS1

As we continue our coverage of this year’s Nuart Festival, our attention shifts to a street reunion of sorts between DVS-1 and David Choe (featured).  The last time they met up at the festival in Norway was 2009, where they put up a tremendous amount of collaborative work in a short period of time. This time around, they were no less productive, getting up indoors and out including this entire room they covered from floor to ceiling. More photos from AM photographer Henrik Haven after […]

Auctions / Benefits: “MTV RE:DEFINE” Results

A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres  – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. Phillips de Pury & Company brokered the auction to a sold-out audience […]

Openings: Interesni Kazki – “Objects of the Universe” @ Avantgarden

Last week in Milan, the collaborative street muralists from Ukraine, Interesni Kazki, brought their special blend of imagery to AvantGarden. Combining their surreal visions with a sense of whimsy and wonder, the duo impressed the crowd with their plentiful paintings, which translated quite well into the gallery setting especially when executed in large-scale. Also, they gave their fans a taste of what they are famous for (see Russia, Ibiza, Portugal, and Slovakia) with several wall pieces inside and out including a playful “window” at the […]

Nuart Festival ’11: Vhils

Yesterday, we brought you Escif’s contributions to this year’s Nuart Festival. Today, we focus on another great street artist, the Lisbon-based Vhils (filmed) who introduced his unique techniques to his fans in Norway. Not only did he work his magic inside with this double skull chiseling, he also worked on a piece outside on a similar theme. AM photographer Henrik Haven was on hand to document the action.  More after the jump…

Showing: Masakatsu Sashie – “Moon” @ Zipangu (Osaka)

Last showing a striking, large scale painting at Art HK back in May, Japanese contemporary artist Masakatsu Sashie is this time participating in a group exhibition in his home country. Moon, which opened on the 28th, saw a slight departure from the artist’s signature orb paintings, or perhaps more accurately a return of sorts to the hybrid machine compositions more relevant to the his early work. Both of the paintings, especially that of the large ship-inspired Jamboree, resembled themes revitalized during his last solo, De […]

Openings: Meggs – “Inner Demons II” @ Backwoods Gallery

Prior to showing in San Francisco, the talented Meggs exhibited the second part of his Inner Demons exhibition at Melbourne’s Backwoods Gallery. Similar to his showing in London’s Red Bull Studios, the artist returned to his home country to display a collection of paintings, sculptures and prints utilizing his signature wild strokes & splash techniques. Check out more after the jump.

Openings: Dylan Egon – “Home of the Brave” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Rolex, Adidas, Fender and Leica – what do those brands have in common? The answer is artist Dylan Egon. His experience as a tabletop design consultant & product stylist combined with a deep knowledge in the history of design & retail products allows him to create the profound and interesting art installations that we saw at this exhibition. These nostalgic assemblages were created by Egon for Home of the Brave at Jonathan Levine Gallery which focuses on his love of Americana. Check out […]

Auctions: Bonhams “Urban Art Sale” Results (September)

Last Wednesday, Bonhams hosted their September Urban Art Sale to a “packed house” at the New Bond Street location in Central London. As we highlighted the strength of some recent Banksy results in our overview and analysis of his Top 25 Most Expensive Works Ever, money appears to continue pouring into street art unimpeded at the auction level, despite the general malaise evident in the financial markets. This fact was further reinforced in the wake of last week’s Bonhams Sale, with the auction realizing a […]

Nate Lowman / Dash Snow / Dan Colen – “Three Amigos” @ Galleria Massimo De Carlo (Rome)

Affectionately referred to a “Warhol’s Children” in an in-depth New York Magazine article from 2007, the group of New York outcasts from the so-called “Bowery School” – including Dan Colen and Dash Snow (and Ryan McGinely, though not included in this event) – represented a new generation of provocative, scandalous, unique, and talented artists. Add Nate Lowman, another New York artist who represents the same ideals of the group of risk takers, into the equation with Colen and Dash and you have Three Amigos. Organized by […]
