Preview: Phillips de Pury Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales

AM continues its coverage of the London February Auctions (see our Christie’s preview) with a look at Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Evening and Day Sales (February 12 – 13 2010). Overall, there are fewer outstanding pieces available here than at Christie’s or Sotheby’s, however there are still many fantastic, iconic pieces up for grabs, including several Basquiats, a strong Banksy, an early Kaws set, and a fabulous Ai Weiwei triptych (above). On Thursday night, Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “In Case You’re Lost”, at San Francisco’s Frey Norris. The vibrant collection of paintings, sculptures, and installations, consisting of what we affectionately call the “2.0” era of Matsu’s exciting career, were welcomed by the enthusiastic bay area crowd. Toronto-based artist Tristram Lansdowne (featured) opens his New York – and United States – solo debut “Refuge” this coming Saturday, February 13th, at Joshua Liner Gallery in the heart of Chelsea. Openings: Jef Aerosol – “All Shook Up” @ Ad Hoc Art

Old school French stencil artist, Jef Aerosol, opened his show in New York last week at Eastern District in association with Ad Hoc Art. “All Shook Up” featured classic pieces from the street artist, as well new pieces of cultural icons like Jay-Z and Basquiat – of course all emphasized with his ubiquitous red arrows. Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – Rental Gallery

New York’s Rental Gallery had a fantastic booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary, featuring artwork in a range of mediums, including sculpture, photography, painting, and mixed media. They featured artists from their talented roster, including Andrea Longacre-White, Matthew Chambers, and artist, editor, and musician Brendon Fowler. The highlight was Fowler’s collision of framed artwork, with a row of pretty floral pieces interrupted by a photograph crashing violently along the middle (pictured above). New York artist Martin Wittfooth’s show “Tempest” is set to open this Saturday night, February 14th in Santa Monica at the Copro Gallery. Known for his vivid paintings of animals, often at their most primal moments, among the rusted and crumbling remnants of human society, Wittfooth will be bringing a new body of work, including sculptures. David Choe opened his latest show, “Character Assassination” last Thursday night at FIFTY24SF. Choe, who has deep ties with both the Bay Area, as well as the Upper Playground family, brought an incredibly large turnout for his long awaited SF return. A pretty big show that seems to have been flying under the radar is KAWS’ upcoming show this month in Spain. Galería Javier López will be paying host to a new body of work from the New York-based street turned contemporary artist with the opening set for February 17th. It’s been almost a year since his solo at Honor Fraser and we’re sure that we aren’t the only ones fiendin’ for their KAWS fix. Discuss KAWS here.

Art Los Angeles Contemporary ’10 – David Kordansky Gallery

One of the most exciting galleries showing emerging art talent in Culver City, David Kordansky Gallery had a colorful and visually stunning booth at Art Los Angeles Contemporary that contained a mixture of mediums, including painting, sculpture, and photography. It included artists from their excellent gallery roster, including Amy Bessone, Aaron Curry, Mark Flores, Ruby Neri, Anthony Pearson, Mai-Thu Perret, and Lesley Vance.
