Openings: Know Hope @ Ad Hoc Art

Know Hope’s show (previewed) at Ad Hoc Art opened last weekend in NY to a pretty good crowd.  As with most of his shows, the centerpiece was an installation, vividly bringing to life the imagery of his art.  His well-known grappling and intertwined characters were again the stars in this body of work that seemed to have a seafaring theme. See more pics after the jump.

Luke Chueh will be back in March with his first solo show for 2009 at Corey Helford Gallery.  His show entitled “From Light Cometh Darkness” will feature over 20 new paintings and drawings that will no doubt include some of his bears in various dark, comical, depressing, or satirical situations.  His friend Thomas Han will be showing concurrently in Corey Helford’s loft area. Openings: Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Hope” @ Smithsonian: National Portrait Gallery

The Smithsonian Institution has always been considered one of most prestigious museums in the world. It houses some amazing works including the “Portraits of America’s Presidents.” So, what’s a more fitting way to kick off the inauguration weekend than with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery unveiling and inducting Shepard Fairey’s symbolic “Hope” image of Barack Obama. (previously announced here.) AM was invited to come along all-access and document the historic unveiling ceremony. The elegant brunch reception in the Smithsonian courtyard preceded the unveiling as Shepard mingled with the “who’s who” that […]

Openings: Manifest Hope DC

The Manifest Hope: DC exhibition, showcasing the spirit of the grass-root artist movement, officially opened it’s doors Saturday morning, but Friday night, select VIPs and friends were invited to preview the pop-up gallery.  The packed house reflected the energy that is currently flowing into the nation’s capital for Inauguration.  With the crew working hard to put the 11th hour finishing touches on the exhibition prior to the unveiling, the inspired looks from the audience once curtains came up made the week long marathon set-up all worthwhile! AM took […]

Audrey Kawasaki will be opening a show in Australia at Outre Gallery on February 13th. This will mainly be an exhibition of sold out prints (APs) with only one new original (in progress seen above). There will also be a new print scheduled for released as well. For our readers down under who want more of Audrey, look for a larger show in 2010 that should presumably include more originals. Discuss show here. Discuss Audrey Kawasaki here.

Andrew Schoultz & AJ Fosik @ Space 1026

Andrew Schoultz and AJ Fosik opened up a pretty amazing show full of complex installations last weekend at Space 1026 in Philadelphia. We have never really envisioned their work interacting but the kinetic energy of Schoultz’s frenzied imagery blends nicely with the sculpts of Fosik’s beasts and folklore – perhaps it’s the complementary color palettes. Not to mention, the cryptic letterings of Fosik combines with Schoultz’s penchant for incorporating the symbolism of U.S. currency to form a body of work that hints of conspiracies and […]
