Openings: Matt Dangler & Yumiko Kayukawa @ M Modern

Headed out to Palm Springs last night to attend the opening of Matt Dangler’s “Out From the Whirlwind” (previewed) and Yumiko Kayukawa’s “The Last 34” (previewed).  Matt’s paintings looked to be getting more detailed with this body of work.  He also spent time explaining some of the symbolism and geometry behind each piece leaving us impressed with the amount of planning and thought he gave to each painting.  Yumiko’s show highlighted many of the endangered species around the world including polar bears, elephants and leopards.  […]

Openings: Mostly Memory @ Thinkspace Gallery

AM kicked off a weekend loaded with great shows by attending the opening of Mostly Memory at Thinkspace (previewed here and here) featuring the work of street artists Armsrock and Elbow-Toe. Gallery patrons were abuzz over the depth, significance, and aura of insight found within the series of works presented by both artists. Check out all of the photos from the opening and the pieces from all the artists after the jump.

Ayako Rokkaku @ Scope Miami

Over at Basel Week Miami, there were hundreds if not thousands of artists that were represented at the various art fairs. Ayako Rokkaku was one that caught AM’s eye and we did a little more digging for you. Similar to another rising Japanese arist: Masakatsu Sashie (here), Ayako also got her start at Takashi Murakami’s Geisai art fair where she won Scout Prize at Geisai #4/#10 and the prestigious Akio Goto Prize at Geisai #9. Her style is unique in that she paints not with brushes […]

Lehman Brothers to sell art collection

We’ve all heard of the unfortunate events to hit the economy in recent months with major financial investment firms going bankrupt and many assets falling to zero. Apparently these major financial firms have been some of the biggest investors in the art world. Recently, Lehman asked a bankruptcy judge to approve a 20k payment to its art handlers in order to start showing their collection to potential buyers. Lehman needs sell off part of art collection to raise at least 8 million dollars. It seems that […]

Preview: Yumiko Kayukawa @ M Modern

Japan native Yumiko Kayukawa’s show “The Last 34” opens tomorrow night concurrently with Matt Dangler’s solo at M Modern Gallery. Yumiko is known for her fashionable women, colors, and Japanese motifs. For this show, she seems to have make use of more animal clusters – we love the composition in the piece seen above. More images after the jump.

Setup: Mostly Memory @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last night, AM stopped by Thinkspace to check out the setup for Mostly Memory (previewed) featuring Armsrock and Elbow-Toe, opening this Friday, December 12th @ 7pm. As we left the gallery, we noticed that Elbow-Toe had already made sure Los Angeles knew he was in town by “getting up” with a couple of wheatpastes. Check out these photos and the rest of the setup after the jump.

She brings us seventeen wonderful new paintings to enjoy of which we obtained two more new images (thanks to Richard Goodall) since AM last talked about her. We sat down with the Merino based artist to chat a little about her influences, her illustration work, and her plans for 2009 among other things after the jump…
