Preview: INLE @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Next Thursday, March 11th, the highly anticipated INLE group show will open at Gallery 1988’s Melrose location. Curated by Greg Simkins, the exhibition has been a long time coming for the LA-based artist as much of his work references his childhood favorite, Watership Down, a book that has had a profound impact on him as an artist. Featuring one of the best lineup of artists we have seen in a long time, this is definitely one show you don’t want to miss. Take some time […]

Jason Jaworski’s DIE JUNGE DIE YOUNG

Jason Jaworski is opening his latest performance/film piece this weekend at San Francisco’s annual Noise Pop festival. Aptly titled DIE JUNGE DIE YOUNG, the film serves as a summation of Jaworski’s year in travels and an expression of his pain at the recent loss of some friends and family. The last time we saw Jaworski perform, he was on stage with David Choe’s (featured), both in their underwear, serving as backup dancers to Die Antwo0rd. Needless to say, with an accompanying installation by Monica Canilao, […]

Preview: Gary Baseman – “Walking Through Walls” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On March 5, an exhibition of new works by Gary Baseman will open at Jonathan LeVine Gallery.  It will be the Los Angeles-based artist’s second show at the gallery and his first solo show in New York in six years.  This new body of work represents a more personal and somber side of the artist, who lost his father in the past year.  As the title of the exhibition suggests, the theme of the show concerns breaking through boundaries and limitations, imposed both by society […]

Preview: Ian Francis – “Fireland” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Ramping up for his first solo exhibition in New York City, Ian Francis is set to unveil a new body of his haunting, yet exceedingly moving, work at the Joshua Liner Gallery next week. Opening Thursday, March 3rd, Fireland will see the British artist truly testing the bounds of his imagination and flexing his technical muscle to create a raw mixed-media blend of abstraction and figuration, a lucid marriage of dreamscapes lingering with nightmarish overtones. As evidenced from the work exhibited during Art Basel Week […]

Preview: Andy Kehoe – “Strange Wanderings” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Master of the autumn palette, Andy Kehoe will be bringing his rich landscapes and creatures to New York when he opens his solo “Strange Wanderings” alongside Gary Baseman at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. We haven’t seen a large body of work from Andy since the end to 2009, so we are looking forward to seeing what he has to offer come March 5th. More preview images after the jump…

Studio Visits / Preview: James Jean – “Rebus” @ Martha Otero

As you may know, James Jean (interviewed) has an upcoming show enititled “Rebus” at Martha Otero on March 12th. What you may not know is that this body of work has been over two years in the making. Since his groundbreaking show “Kindling” at Jonathan Levine, James has been expanding his style to a body of work that’s larger in scale and looser in composition. AM had a chance to stop by and hang out at his Los Angeles studio last year where he was already neck […]
