Last month, China’s invisible man, Liu Bolin, was in Long Beach, California giving his TED Talk. As part of the presentation, a live demonstration was set up where his technique was put on display as he gradually blended in with the stage background. After another enjoyable retreat in Hawaii for AM, it’s time to wrap up another successful POW WOW (see all our coverage here). Mexican artist Liqen recently headed south to spend some time on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast. Besides enjoying some good food, the street muralist did some birdwatching and sketching different species of these winged creatures. Inspired by the experience, he recently painted this wood building in Esmeraldas although some of the things he painted may be from his impressive imagination. Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). Shepard Fairey was recently invited to the Santa Fe University of Art and Design to do a lecture as part the school’s Artists for Positive Social Change series. Of course while there, Mr. Obey decided to create a mural for his fans in New Mexico. Considering the venue, Shep decided to get up with a pro-art, anti-war piece. Another mural created for POW WOW Hawaii by Kamea Hadar and Rone (see his first mural here) was finished up after the week ended. Combining the local talents of Hadar and Rone’s skills from down under, the mural featured a closeup portrait of a Hawaiian girl beautifying the Kaka’ako area for years to come. We haven’t heard much from Italian street muralist Blu recently, but hopefully this new mural he just painted in Rome is a sign of things heating up for the prolific artist. The piece featuring interlocking cars was painted on the side of ALEXIS, an old building from the twenties which has been abandoned for years, but recently occupied by a group of intrepid students. It is named after Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed in 2008 by Greek police in Athens. Discuss Blu here.
Recently, street sculptor & photographer Slinkachu was asked to participate 20 Years of War Child, a new exhibition celebrating 20 years of the charity’s (War Child) work. He created three installations that he staged in various parts of London, the results of which will be put on display at The British Music Experience through March 28th.
