Streets: Anthony Lister (Los Angeles)

Hitting the streets of Los Angeles once again, Anthony Lister (filmed) spent time getting up all over town the last couple weeks leading up to his current show at New Image Art. Showing his versatility with the roller and spraycans, working day and night, the Australian vandal left one of his signature ballerinas at Superchief Gallery as well as his take on police brutality (seen above). From August 13th until September 27th, the Plus 81 Gallery in NYC is hosting a solo exhibition by Meguru Yamaguchi (featured). The show includes the most recent works from his “Cut & Paste” series of robust abstract pieces. Born and raised in Shibuya, Tokyo’s epicenter of youth culture, the Japanese artist is now working and living in Brooklyn, NY. This mixture of experiences surely influenced his work that combines traditional brush stroke painting with new techniques. The pieces feel very dynamic due to their unusual shapes and untamed […]

Tomorrow night (September 12th), Jonathan LeVine Gallery (529 West 20th Street) will be hosting the opening of Beasts of Arcadia, a new solo from Joel Rea. The predominant imagery from this new body of work features human figures and tigers, placed in environments that are actively hostile to their existence. Interesting, many of these elements are collaged together from photographs that the Australia-based artist takes and then paints in great detail embedded in their surreal surroundings and situation. Stop by for a look yourself if you are in town. You […]

Art Focus: Troy Coulterman

The colorful sculptures of Troy Coulterman recently caught our eye, mostly humans entwined with abstract and geometric forms that drip or extrude from each figure. He currently has a show at Arch Enemy Arts, a series of works collectively entitled Full Disclosure and on view in Philadelphia through September 27th. He further states – “I chose these basic shapes because they are loaded with symbolism and have various meanings throughout different cultures. A triangle can represent future, truth or intellect, a circle can represent present, perfection […]
