Baby Tattooville Day 2: Riverside Art Museum

After an afternoon of artists alternating between sketching for attendees or working on the collaborative “Art Jam” piece, everyone headed down for the “Beyond Baby Tattooville” show at the Riverside Art Museum. We had previously previewed the show, but there was a new additional piece from each featured artist for sale at this exhibition. See a video of these new pieces & photos from the show after the jump.

Baby Tattooville Day 2: 11-12 pm

The session right before lunch was a panel of three artists: Dave Cooper, Brandi Milne, and Ana Bagayan. Dave did drawings of one of his famous luscious, lavacious, and occasionally obese women. Each attendee of the event was to receive one of these…there were inked drawings for sale too! (look for a future feature on these beautifully rendered drawings). He was also very happy to personalize these drawings to each attendee. Brandi decided to little paintings on matchbooks to give away. She also painted on […]

Baby Tattooville Day 2: 10-11 am

Day 2 of Baby Tattooville kicked off with a presentation by Murphy Design and then moved on to a talk with Bob Dob and Joe Ledbetter about the process of art toy making. Bob Dob described his toy as having three different expressions and holding three different vices.  Once of which was getting drunk…on milk LOL.  His contribution to the “goodie bag” for participants were a special customized “black eye” Luey toy one lucky recipient gets a Luey with TWO black eyes).  He also let […]

Baby Tattooville Day 1: Life Drawing Party

After coming back from Jeff Soto’s studio after dinner. The attendees and the artists came back to the resort and got a very special treat. An authentic “life drawing” session was awaiting… not only for the participants, but also for the artists to experience. This session took us back to an art school 101 tradition… study of the “natural” human form. Yes, a fully nude female to model and hold seductive poses for 20 mins at a time. As part of the real art experience, everyone was encourage to pick up sketch […]

Teaser: Tessar Lo @ Roq La Rue

One of the most talented and thoughtful young artists that we know, Tessar Lo, is having an exhibition on November 7th in Seattle. By now, most of you have probably seen a couple images from the show on the news page of Roq La Rue‘s new website (for example, what is to be one of the larger pieces *seen above*). Well, Tessar was nice enough to forward us several additional closeups and teasers to show our readers. More after the jump.

Baby Tattooville Day 1: Jeff Soto Studio Visit

After a quick round of mingling and refreshments, the participants of Baby Tattooville were invited to the heart of the Jeff Soto factory.  Once there, the attendees were treated to a “preview” of Jeff’s upcoming solo show “Turning in Circles” at the Riverside Art Museum in December (previously teased). With over 15 “in progress” paintings to delight our eyes, AM was astounded to find out that Jeff is only PARTIALLY done with his plans for the upcoming show. He has a gigantic installation planned and will also look […]

Baby Tattooville Day 1: 3-5 pm

Baby Tattooville started off with an introduction panel of participating artists as well as passing out of some items to participants. One of these was a limited print by Shag that doubled as a name tag. After the introduction we were instructed to make a mark on a canvas with a charcoal marker which Michael Whelan will convert into a work of art over the weekend.  Now we are off to Jeff Soto’s dinner for the “Art Jam” as well as dinner…  More to follow. […]

Openings: D*face show @ BRP

aPOPcalypse Now! is the new D*Face show, and it’s a special one. D*Face, has created an entirely new body of work for the show at Black Rat Press Gallery in London. And while still recognizably D*Face, shows a marked stylistic departure. D*Face has taken time out of his busy schedule to encapsulate the show’s central message thusly: “My work reflects our popular culture encompassing the American dream and the ideal of good triumphing over evil, no longer relevant in today’s society where the ‘invade now […]

Shepard Fairey speaking @ the Corcoran Museum (DC)

Influential street artist Shepard Fairey has been a cornerstone of the US urban art scene for more than a decade, but his influence trancended mere street art after he created an image of Barack Obama so powerful, that it became the image that symbolized Obama’s presidential campaign. How fitting that the LA based Fairey will come to Washington DC to speak about the social and political issues that have influenced his art work. The famous Corcoran Museum will hold a symposium with Shepard Fairey and Al Farrow. Both artists will […]

Openings: Art For Hope @ Merry Karnowsky

The “Art For Hope” benefit (previously mentioned) took place at Merry Karnowsky Gallery last night. This was a special “one night only” group show to raise funds for the Obama campaign. Although this event was not planned very far in advance, everything came together nicely. Many of the contributing artists were in attendance last night -  Mark Ryden, Marion Peck, Kent Williams, Mari Inukai, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Camille Rose Garcia, just to name a few. In addition to the artwork, there were several tables […]
