Recap: POW! WOW! Taiwan

Last week, the first POW! WOW! Taiwan wrapped up successfully as invited artists finished public works throughout the capital city of Taipei. With the main event based in Hawaii (see 2014), it looks like the crew behind this annual art retreat will be branching out to different parts of the world. Openings: “Space//Squared” @ White Walls Gallery

Last month, White Walls Gallery in San Francisco opened a group exhibition entitled Space//Squared. Curated by Sven Davis, the showing was a followup to an event last year in Portland (covered). This time around, participating artists were again asked to contribute artwork in a 10 x 10″ format. Along with pieces from over 100 artists (list seen below), Adam Friedman and Robert Minervini also created a site-specific installation featuring a series of paintings interspersed throughout mural elements. Upcoming: Brandi Milne – “Here Inside My Broken Heart” @ Corey Helford Gallery (Popup)

On June 14th at a special popup location (10000 Culver Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232), Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting a new body of work from Brandi Milne. The new paintings have been in the works for almost 2 years with each piece drawing from difficult personal experiences from the Los Angeles area-based artist. Collectively entitled Here Inside My Broken Heart, the work features a somber palette for her characters as they contemplate new situations. Discuss Brandi Milne here.

Tonight in Seattle, Winston Wächter Fine Art will be opening a solo show from Zaria Forman, who we featured in an Art Focus article earlier this year. The exhibition holds special meaning for the Brooklyn-based artist, as her exquisite paintings will be shown alongside the photographs of her late mother, Rena Bass Forman. The two of them traveled together to see the natural wonders of the world in places like Greenland, Iceland, Patagonia and India, inspiring Zaria’s own interest in documenting disappearing places. While being fully focused on his studio work and painting works for his upcoming solo show at Jonathan LeVine in NYC later this year, DALeast recently found time to create this quick street piece in Cape Town. Titled Raiden－EX1, this mural features another one of his wild cats, this time blending in with the busy traffic in the legislative capital of South Africa. Argentinian based artist Franco Fasoli aka JAZ opened a solo show at BC Gallery in Berlin on June 6th. Titled Vinculo, this exhibition is a continuation of the successful collaboration between the gallery and the artist. The paintings created for this show are “defined by the tensions of ambivalence,” and instead of showing his signature anamorphic imagery, are “divided” into animalistic and humanoid ones. Cologne’s Ruttkowski;68 Gallery recently opened a unique gallery show by Danish multidisciplinary talent, Henrik Vibskov. Mostly known as a fashion designer and the mastermind behind his avant-garde fashion label, Vibskov is an acomplished musician, costume and set designer, and an artist. POW! WOW! recently completed another exciting project in their hometown of Honolulu. A few months after wrapping up another successful edition of POW! WOW! Hawaii (covered), they teamed up with Versace in order to create a large scale mural to celebrate the opening of their new flagship store.
