Publications: David Choe for VICE

The newest VICE magazine features the artwork of David Choe (featured) gracing its cover on what they refer to as their The Horse Is a Horse of Course of Course issue. If you remember, VICE was for whom Choe’s Thumbs Up! series was filmed for where the street and graffiti artist was seen hitchiking his way across North America and China. Discuss David Choe here.

Discuss Saber here.

Upcoming: Li Hongbo – “Tools Of Study” @ Klein Sun Gallery

During Art Basel Week in Miami, one of the artists that caught our attention was Li Hongbo and his flexible paper sculptures. Represented by the Klein Sun Gallery at Art Miami & CONTEXT, the Chinese artist and former book editor presented pieces that look like solid and often created in a classic style, yet when stretched, the entire concept that the viewer had of his work is flipped upside down. For those in New York who are interested, he’ll be opening a new show tonight at Klein Sun […]

Upcoming: “Based on Actual Events” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Two artists that we have had our eyes on for a while that were featured in some of our previous Art Focus articles, Eloy Morales (focus) & Joel Rea (focus) will be part of a group show this weekend at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Based on Actual Events also includes Alyssa Monks and Diego Koi, with all four artists showing particular skill with hyper-realism. If Morales’ work above piques your interest, plan to attend the opening on Saturday night, January 11th.

Streets: Swoon – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part II)

In the middle of last Fall, Swoon (interviewed) was tapped as the next artist to hit the iconic Bowery & Houston mural location. We caught her working day and night (here) to get her visual language up for New Yorkers to enjoy. Utilizing her well known hand-painted paper cuts and wheatpaste collages, Swoon & her team created a beautiful mural that captured the layers of the city and its urban inhabitants. Ironically, once the mural was finally completed the city underwent construction that blocked part of the mural. […]

Art Focus: Zaria Forman

For our latest Art Focus feature, we have for you the Brooklyn-based Zaria Forman and her work exploring climate change. Inspired by her childhood travels, she has taken recent trips to places like the northwest coast of Greenland, retracing the 1869 journey of American painter William Bradford, then using this experience to paint the rapidly diminishing arctic landscape (seen above). Her newest series (some seen below) was started after traveling to the Maldives, the other end of the equation if you will, one of the places in […]

The opening will mark the premiere of her latest stop-motion claymation film entitled Eager along with new related paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. If her some of her previous films (for example – Mound) are any indication, fans in NYC are in for a treat. Here is an intriguing description: “Haunting, hollow specters stretch, transmogrify and multiply as their synchronized shifts hint at ancient, […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey (NYC)

When in New York City the old adage is true – “Go big or go home.” In the latter half of 2013, Shepard Fairey visited the Big Apple for the Wooster Collective anniversary show (covered) where he stayed for a while to share his brand of visual beautification. Mr. Spray himself worked alongside a great group of street artist, to give back to the DUMBO district (featured) in Brooklyn. The result of his work was a beautiful large scale mural over 40 feet high. But that wasn’t […]

The ideas and emotions evoked by the six artist’s work are described as “beautiful danger, living life to the extreme, broken dreams and endless cycles of incurable […]
