Basel Week Miami ’13: Untitled Art Fair

Yesterday, we visited one of the satellite fairs for Art Basel Week in Miami – the Untitled Art Fair. In its second year, the event expanded to include 90 galleries and not-for-profit spaces from 19 different countries. Instead of working with a selection committee, the fair uses a curatorial approach trusting the New York-based Omar Lopez-Chahoud to select participants to the invite-only showing. Take a look at some photos below… Discuss Art Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’13: Art Basel First Look (Part I)

Today marked the official opening of the Art Basel main fair at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but yesterday was the exclusive First Choice & Vernissage where a majority of the high profile buying action took place. AM took its annual pilgrimage to Florida to catch the offical launch of Art Basel Week Miami as the flagship fair launched with a slew of household names such as Murakami (seen above), Miro, Koons, Emin, Longo, Calder, Tomaselli, Kusama, Sherman, Nara, Basquiat and many more were featured at one of […]

Ever wonder what the art collections of artists hold? The New York Times’ T Magazine answers this question for four artists that you may have heard of before – KAWS, Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, and Ugo Rondinone. Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Revival” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

The Joshua Liner Gallery in New York recently opened a solo exhibition from Kris Kuksi entitled Revival. The intricate and complex sculptural works from the Kansas-based artist plays a perfect contrast to the deceptively simple works from Riusuke Fukahori, who is concurrently showing in the same gallery. Kuksi’s mixed media assemblages explore the dark sides of the human psyche with ornate representations created from model kits and other materials that he has re-appropriated. His works need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated, but for those unable […]

Streets: D*Face (Tokyo)

The UK-based D*Face (interviewed) is currently in Japan to promote his new book – The Art of D*Face: One Man and His Dog. To that end, he will be holding a signing event (tonight) and show at Parco Gallery X in Tokyo where he will also be releasing a Japanese flag version print (seen below).  Of course, while in town, he also took time to work on a mural (located in Shibuya). Releases: Tiffany Bozic – “Strigiformes” Print

In association with her recent showing at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco, Tiffany Bozic has released a print entitled Strigiformes. The striking image of a series of overlapping owls is a reproduction of a painting from the exhibition and is available now. It will be produced in a run of 100, is sized at 20″ x 16.5″ (12″ x 16″ image), and cost $165. Head over here if you want to add this to your collection. Discuss Tiffany Bozic here.

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

Openings: Riusuke Fukahori – “The Painted Breath” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last month, the Joshua Liner Gallery in Chelsea presented all new works from Yokohama-based artist Riusuke Fukahori in his New York solo debut. The self-described goldfish fanatic keeps many of them around his studio for inspiration as well as considers them a metaphor for his life. Utilizing a resin technique that took over 8 years to perfect, the layered pieces almost look too real to be paintings, especially when presented in containers that are often associated with the fish in real life. Take a look at more photos as well […]

Streets: JR @ National Library of France (Paris)

French “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) recently turned the facade of the National Library of France in Paris into his largest photo printer yet as he brought his Inside Out project back home again. Pasted in strips over the course of a week in November, the striking image and clever use of the building further cements himself as one of his country’s foremost street artists. Take a look at more images below… Photo credit: truxi. Discuss JR here.

Showing: Alex Prager – “Face in the Crowd” @ Corcoran Gallery of Art

If you will be in Washington DC in the upcoming several months, make sure you stop by the Corcoran Gallery of Art to take a look at Alex Prager’s new exhibition – Face in the Crowd. For her first solo museum show in the United States, the Los Angeles-based photographer and filmmaker has presented an ambitious new series of works that deal with the idea of crowds and their effects on individuals as well utilizing this new direction to confront her own fear of crowds. On display […]
