Opening: Nicola Verlato & Caleb Brown – “Pagan Pop” & “A Modern World” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

A couple weekends ago, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery hosted new work from Nicola Verlato (featured) & Caleb Brown entitled Pagan Pop & A Modern World collectively. Featuring two surreal paintings styles that pair nicely together, the exhibition allowed fans to look into the imaginative minds of these two artists. On one side of the gallery, Verlato (seen above) created suspended human forms placed in beautifully rendered fantastical situations seen through the lens of how Western society has continually attempted to suppress its pagan roots. Openings: Andrew Schoultz – “New Work” @ Morgan Lehman

A couple weeks ago, the Morgan Lehman Gallery in New York welcomed Andrew Schoultz back for his third solo show there simply entitled New Work. Touching on geo-politcal issues through the metaphor of imagery derived from currency, ships, maelstroms, trojan horses, symbols of the illuminati and other common motifs seen in the Mission School artist’s repertoire, the new paintings were set off nicely with a background of bricks and overlapping water features on the walls. Openings: Neck Face – “No Mercy For The Weak” @ New Image Art

Last weekend, the New Image Art hosted another “frightening” exhibition from Neck Face (interviewed) at their West Hollywood showspace. In addition to works and prints highlighting his special form of dark humor, he also created a shrine to the Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez), who recently died in prison, as well as accented the walls with his signature colors and aesthetic. Brazilian duo Os Gemeos (featured) continued their tour to celebrate the launch of Hennessy’s newest artist VS Bottles. This time it was on the west coast and the good folks of Los Angeles had an opportunity to enjoy twins talent and their vibrant Brazilian vibe. Along with the plethora of murals painted for this year’s Nuart Festival (see previous years), the artists involved also put together a group exhibition indoors as well. David Choe, C215, Martin Whatson, Hush, Ernest Zacharevic, Dal East, Faith47, Martha Cooper, Aiko and others all created works in their own recognizable style. World renowned “photograffeur” JR (interviewed) will make a return to UK and premiere a new exhibition at Lazarides Rathbone. Entitled ACTIONS, this exhibition will take place in two parts as the indoor works will focus on the goals accomplished around the globe and will include images from Wrinkles of the City in Berlin (featured), his journey to North Korea and his 2005 Portrait of a Generation. Next Monday (September 16th), Brian Viveros (featured) will be releasing a new print Punch Drunk In Love in two different editions. We recently attended the public unveiling of the new Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) mural created by KAWS we first previewed at night. The new mural location also contains a bike rack specially designed by David Byrne. This sculpture/rack entitled “Bold Wink” is a perfect eye catcher to grab some eyeballs as BAM patrons can see this new project opposite the institution’s Peter Jay Sharp building.
